Hopkins Nets 21 in 75-67 Loss at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) scored 21 points to lead a second-half comeback by the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team, but Quinnipiac University made 7 of 8 free throws in the last 30 seconds to record a 75-67 victory Saturday evening at People's United Center.
Hopkins was 6-for-10 from 3-point range and a perfect 3 of 3 from the foul line to account for his team-high 21 points. Sean Suthlerin (new Brighton, Minn.) finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds; it was the fifth double-double of the season for both players. Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) tallied 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
QU was led by Rich Kelly's 36 points; he made 13 of 18 field goal attempts, including 5-for-6 on 3-pointers. No other Bobcat scored in double figures.
UNH is now 5-5 overall and QU improved to 3-4.

FIRST HALF
- Both teams struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes.
- UNH struck first on a 3-pointer by Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) 2:10 into the game. Maulsby hit another 3-ball almost two minutes later (at 16:57) to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.
- Trailing 10-4, Quinnipiac scored 11 consecutive points go ahead 15-10 at 10:46.
- Guadarrama's three-point play put UNH back in front, 16-15, at 7:43.
- A layup by Sutherlin gave the Wildcats a 24-23 lead at 2:56, but the home team ended the half on a 3-0 run to take a 26-24 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
- The Bobcats outscored the Wildcats 11-3 in the opening four minutes of the second half to build a double-digit lead, 37-27.
- Trailing 43-32 with 12:45 remaining, Sutherlin hit a pair of free throws to ignite an 8-0 run that lifted UNH within three points, 43-40, on a Hopkins 3-ball at 11:35.
- Hopkins hit two more 3-pointers to tie the score, 48-48, at 9:34.
- The scored was also tied at 50 and 53 before Sutherlin's jumper put New Hampshire back in front, 55-53, at 6:37.
- QU responded with five consecutive points to regain the lead, 58-55, at 5:23.
- A layup and 3-pointer by Martinez gave the Wildcats a 60-58 lead at 4:23.
- With the score tied at 60, UNH missed three shots on one possession, and then another 3-point attempt.
- QU's Rich Kelly completed a three-point play at 2:41 and then made layups at 2:09 and 1:20 to give the Bobcats a 67-60 lead.
- Guadarrama made a pair of foul shots with 57 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to five points.
- QU went 1-for-2 from the foul line and Hopkins drilled his fifth 3-pointer of the game to lift the Wildcats within 68-65 with 51 seconds on the clock.
- The Bobcats missed the front end of the 1-and-1 bonus, but UNH missed a game-tying 3-point shot at the other end of the court with 36 to play.
- QU's Kevin Marfo hit both foul shots to give the home team a five-point lead, 70-65, with 29 seconds left.
- Five seconds later, Suthlerin's layup lifted the Wildcats within 70-67.
- After the Bobcats hit one foul shot, UNH missed a 3-pointer and then the home team hit two more free throws to extend the margin to 73-67 with 13 seconds remaining.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 2-3 lifetime record against Quinnipiac; the Bobcats have won each of the last two meetings.

- Hopkins' 21 points are two less than his career high of 23 that he matched Nov. 20 at Florida International.
- His six 3-pointers are second to his high of seven established Jan. 5, 2019 at Binghamton University; he also netted 23 points that game.
- Sutherlin, who was a DNP because of injury the previous two games, played all 40 minutes. It marked the third time this season he played 40+ minutes.
- With UNH intentionally fouling inside the last minute, both Maultsby and Chris Lester (Barrington, Ill.) fouled out.

- There were nine ties and 11 lead changes in the game.
- New Hampshire made a season-high 12 3-pointers; the 39 3-point attempts also marked a season high.
- UNH shot a season-low 32.9% from the floor (23 of 70); in comparison, Quinnipiac shot 55.6% (25-45).
