Wildcats score early but Huskies gained momentum in the third.
STORRS, Conn. – The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team looked to bounce back from a tough loss to the University of Connecticut on Friday night, but the Huskies overcame an early Wildcat lead to take the weekend series by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats scored in the first four minutes of the game on a power play goal from Tori Howran (Bancroft, Ontario) to get the early edge in the game. The Huskies would tally one goal in the second period and three more in the third to take the season series, 2-1-0.
Senior captain Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) stopped 22 of 25 shots faced, her record on the season falling to 7-6-2.
UP NEXT:
UNH will look to bounce back from the weekend setback, as the team travels to #8 Providence next Friday and Saturday, January 18 and 19. The weekend series will be a culmination of the second straight Relive the Rivalry alumni fundraising challenge.
After the providence series, the Wildcats return home to face Holy Cross on Saturday, January 26, in the beginning of a home-and-home series with the Crusaders. Saturday's home game will be the Hockey Fights Cancer game, and puck drop is at 2 P.M.

GAME RECAP
- The Wildcats got on the power play early due to a UConn checking call. Less than a minute into the power play, Tori Howran (Bancroft, Ontario) took a feed from Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) and converted on the shot to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.
- UNH killed their lone penalty in the first period, and led in shots 11-5.
- The Huskies held off the UNH attack in the second, stopping two power plays and notching a game-tying goal 16 minutes into the period.
- UConn tallied the go-ahead goal 2:38 into the final frame on a neutral-zone turnover and a short pass and one-timer in the center of the offensive zone.
- The Huskies would extend their lead 10:04 into the period with a power play goal from Snodgrass, after the puck was worked around the back of the net by UConn, leaving Snodgrass an opening for the shot.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Howran's goal was her third of the season, and her second power play goal of the season.
- For the first time this season, UNH tallied the first goal but didn't win the game. (5-1-2 record).
- The loss is just UNH's second loss of the year when outshooting its opponent (3-2-3 record)
- New Hampshire is now 3-4-0 when allowing three goals. The three wins came against Yale, Merrimack, and UConn.
- UNH has allowed just seven power play goals this season. Coming into the game they were tied for third in the country with a 91.4% penalty kill.
