A close battle ends the Wildcats’ unbeaten streak.
STORRS, Conn. – After going nine games without a loss, the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team fell to the University of Connecticut by a score of 2-0 on Friday evening at Freitas Ice Forum.
The Wildcats were shutout for the fourth time this season, despite taking 32 shots on net. UNH had six power play opportunities in the contest and several good scoring chances in the latter half of the game to put loose pucks away, but all fell short.
Senior captain Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) was tested in net, facing 34 shots, and making 33 saves, some in spectacular fashion to keep her team in it. Her record is now 7-5-2 on the season,
The two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 3 P.M. The Wildcats follow up this series with the Relive the Rivalry weekend in Providence, January 18 and 19, and they return home the following weekend, January 26 to begin a home-and-home with Holy Cross. The matinee game will be the Hockey Fights Cancer game. Tickets for that game are available at UNHWildcats.com or by calling (603) 862-4000.

GAME RECAP
- The first period saw UNH come out firing with a shots on goal lead of 12-8. The Wildcats went on three power plays in the first but were unable to capitalize.
- UConn's go-ahead strike came 8:02 into the second period by way of Savannah Bouzide, on a rebound to the right side of the crease off a shot from Briana Colangelo.
- UConn took all the momentum in the second, scoring the only goal and outshooting UNH 18-8.
- In the third, the ice was even as UNH tallied 12 shots, UConn tallied 11. The Wildcats were given two more power play opportunities in the third, but UConn's suffocating defense would not allow a scoring chance to convert for UNH.
- The Wildcats pulled their goaltender with just over a minute to play, but an turnover and a pass to Natalie Snodgrass in the neutral zone was enough to get a shot off and put the game out of reach.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Wildcats have only won one game this season without scoring a power play goal; Tuesday evening, January 8 at Yale.
- This is UNH's first loss since November 10, 2018 at #6 Northeastern.
- New Hampshire has lost four games this season when they allow two goals or less. This is their first loss of this nature since November 2, 2018 at Vermont.
- This is the lowest scoring game for New Hampshire this season since the 2-0 victory at Dartmouth. Every game since then has seen at least three goals, with two seven-goal games (4-3 at Merrimack, 4-3 at Yale.)
