McAteer Records Three Saves for First Career Win and Shutout
DURHAM, N.H. – Bailey Fanikos (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored two goals to propel a balanced attack and the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday afternoon's 6-0 win against Bryant University at Memorial Field.
The two goals and four points marked career highs for Fanikos, a junior and first-year Wildcat. Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) recorded a goal and an assist. Nicky Bajus (Lions Bay, British Columbia), Rachel Bossi (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) were the other goal scorers.
UNH goalkeeper Madelyn McAteer (Annapolis, Md.) recorded three saves for her first career win and shutout. Bryant starter Marijn Jaarsma stopped 8 of 12 shots on goal in the first half; Lyndsay Swanston played the second half and was credited with three saves.
New Hampshire is now 2-5 and Bryant, which had won two of its last three games, moves to 2-7.

GAME RECAP
* UNH quickly took a 1-0 lead at 4:35. van den Brekel's reverse-stick rising line drive from the top-right side was going wide of the near post, but Caron deflected the ball into the cage.
* van den Brekel once again utilized a reverse-stick shot -- this time a rolling ball from the left side -- to extend the lead to 2-0 at 17:30.
* The Wildcats converted one of their 10 first-half corners into a 3-0 advantage at 27:33. The ball was pushed wide left to Erin McNamara (Sanbornton, N.H.), and her low drive to the middle of the circle was redirected in by Fanikos, who had her stick angled on the turf.
* Bossi's bouncing shot from the middle of the circle ricocheted off Jaarsma's leg pads into the cage to give the 'Cats a 4-0 lead with 2:19 remaining in the first half.
* New Hampshire took that four-goal lead with an 18-2 shot advantage and 10-1 edge in corners into halftime.
* Fanikos struck again at 38:25. Bossi's initial shot was stopped by Swanston, but Fanikos corralled the rebound in the middle of the circle and deposited the ball into the cage.
* UNH capitalized on another corner to push the lead to 6-0 at 65:43. The battery of Katie Audino (Severn, Md.) and Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.) set up Bajus, who drilled a low shot into the cage for her second goal of the season.
NOTES
* The six goals and 24 shots were season highs for UNH, as were the 17 shots on goal and 14 corners.
* UNH's six goals marked the highest total since Oct. 30, 2016, when the 'Cats also scored six goals vs. Dartmouth College.
* This was the Wildcats' first shutout since Oct. 23, 2015 (4-0 win at Vermont).
* This was the first start of the season and second career start for McAteer.
* Caron's goal ended New Hampshire's scoreless drought at 170 minutes, 28 seconds.
