Caron Scores Game-Winner in 2-1 Victory at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) broke a 1-1 tie to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory against University of Vermont at Moulton Winder Field.
UNH kept alive its hopes of advancing to the America East tournament by improving to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Wildcats are tied with UMass Lowell for fourth place with one America East game remaining. New Hampshire needs the combination of a win and UMass Lowell loss to earn the one remaining playoff berth.
UVM is now 7-9, 3-3.
Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) scored UNH's other goal and Kelsey Rudert (North Grafton, Mass.) made four saves.
Rachel Phillips was the Catamounts' goal scorer and Sierra Espeland was credited with one save.

GAME RECAP
- In the opening 15 minutes, neither team recorded a shot and Vermont had one penalty corner (at 7:17).
- UVM earned another corner at 19:19 and the Catamounts finally recorded the first shot of the game at 19:55, as Pleun Haantjes was denied by Rudert.
- UNH took a 1-0 lead on its first shot at 27:30 when van den Brekel gained possession near the end line on the left side, spun and fired a hard rolling shot through traffic into the cage.
- Vermont converted its third corner into a goal and 1-1 tie at 33:27. Clodagh Ferry inserted the ball with pass outside the top of the circle to Phillips, who reentered and fired a shot into the cage.
- The Catamounts had a 3-2 shot advantage and 3-0 edge in corners the opening 35 minutes.
- UNH generated its first corner of the game two minutes into the second half and the shot off van den Brekel's stick was blocked by a UVM defender.
- Rudert kept the score deadlocked in the 48th minute by denying Lauren Tucker's initial shot and Phillips on the rebound.
- Caron's unassisted goal put New Hampshire back in front, 2-1, at 50:04. van den Brekel initiated the scoring sequence with a long diagonal entry pass toward the left post, where a diving Tiana Morin (Barre, Mass.) redirected the ball off the near post. The ball went across the goalmouth to Caron, who chipped the ball into the open cage.
- UVM called time out in the 57th minute and pulled Espeland in favor of an extra field player with 2:26 remaining but did not record a shot on goal the rest of the way.
NOTES
- Neither team generated much offense, as the teams combined to produce 12 shots – UVM 7, UNH 5 – with eight shots on goal.
- Caron has scored three of the team's four game-winning goals this season. She has five goals and 11 points, both of which are team highs.
- van den Brekel scored a goal for the second consecutive game. She has three goals and eight points this season.
- This was the 41st meeting between the 'Cats; UNH holds a 34-7 edge.
