Arling’s Late Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Rhode Island, 2-1

KINGSTON, R.I. – Sophomore forward Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of play as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 2-1. The Wildcats remain undefeated at 3-0-0 while the Rams fall to 2-1-0.

With the match tied a 1-1 with under 10 minutes to play in regulation, Arling recorded his second goal of the season on a low, hard shot from outside the box that beat URI netminder Leifhelm to the far post. In the 79th minute, sophomore forward Alex Valencia (Tracey, Calif.) fired a corner kick into the box that freshman Ben Gleditsch (Oslo, Norway) connected with, but he put his shot just wide of the net.

Piippo recorded his first points as a Wildcat with a goal in the 18th minute of play. After a foul on the Rams, Piippo fired a free kick from 25 yards out that beat the outstretched hands of Leifhelm into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Freshman Jack Dickson (Bournemouth, England) nearly got the 'Cats on the board in the 10th minute of play as he blasted a shot at the URI goal, but his bid rung the post. Minutes later, Lalaina Randriamanantena (Auvergne, France) connected with a corner kick from Piippo, but his header attempt went just wide of the net.
Rhode Island knotted the score at 1-1 in the 44th minute of play when Zarokostas found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The play started with Peder Kristiansen fired a free kick into the box that Tyler Dickson headed. Zarokostas obtained the loose ball and was able to put it away.
