Dion Pours In a Season High 18 points to Earn a Home Victory Over Holy Cross
12/3/2016 9:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior guard Daniel Dion (Cedar Park, Texas) of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team, scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to aid the Wildcats in a 56-53 win over the College of the Holy Cross Saturday night in Lundholm Gymnasium.
HIGHLIGHTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNH got off to a rocky start as Holy Cross began the game on a 7-0 run, forcing UNH to commit four turnovers on their first six possessions. It was Dion sinking a three to get the Wildcats on the board just before the 16:00 media timeout. After another 7-0 Crusader run, Leissner scored four consecutive points to provide a UNH spark. Dion nailed another three just after pulling up from mid-range to cut the deficit to 21-17. Holy Cross caught fire again in the latter stretch of the half, but the 'Cats were able to score on consecutive possessions to close out the half only down 31-26. UNH shot .391 compared to Holy Cross' .407 from the field, but it was the Crusader .429 from beyond the arch that gave them the edge in the first half.
The second half opened very much like the first, as the Wildcats struggled early from the field until Dion drilled a spot up three before the 16:00 media timeout. Junior Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) came out of the timeout finishing three consecutive inside layups to cut the Crusader lead to three. A corner three from Watkins followed by a Smith layup made it a 42-40 game with 9:00 remaining. With 6:00 left to play, Leissner split the Crusader defense and slammed it home to tie the game at 44. Just a few possessions later, Dion splashed a corner three to give the 'Cats their first lead of the game. Leissner finished a layup with the foul to put UNH up seven, but another Holy Cross 7-0 run tied the game at 51 with 2:00 remaining. With 45 seconds left to play, Leissner buried a spot up triple late in the shot clock to put UNH up by three. Holy Cross' Karl Charles finished a layup with 15.8 to play to make it a 64-53 game, but a Crusader foul put Dion at the line to extend the lead to three.
