WASHINGTON – Senior guard Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team leads five double-digit scorers in the 80-70 win over American University Tuesday night at Bender Arena.
HIGHLIGHTS
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded offense in the first 4:30 as the score was tied 9-9 led by Camara's four points in the paint. No team led by more than four points until the 7:27 minute mark as Burns drilled a jumper with two defenders on him at the baseline. The Eagles responded with back-to-back buckets from Charlie Jones and Matt Cimino to cut the deficit to one point. Reed responded the American push with a three followed by two Dion free throws, both backend attempts, after being fouled at the 3-point line. UNH led 34-28 with 3:38 to play in the first. The Eagles finished the first half with a 5-0 run on a Nelson Sa'eed bucket and a Delante and-1 finish in the lane to cut the UNH lead to one, 34-33, after drilling the free throw.
The second half started much like the first with both teams going back and forth on the offensive end before UNH took the lead for good on a 3-pointer from Reed with 15:34 to play. The 'Cats got second-half stops, holding American to 22.2 percent shooting in the second half after they shot 55.6 percent in the opening frame. The Wildcats lead was stretched to double-digits, 51-62, on a made 3-pointer from Dion with 8:34 to play. About four minutes later Camara finished a hook in the paint to push the Wildcat lead to 18 points, the largest of the game, at 4:55 in the second half.
