Men’s Soccer Ties Siena, 3-3

Team Remains Unbeaten at 2-0-1
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Three different Wildcats scored as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw at Siena College on Saturday. A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.), Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) and Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) each tallied goals for the 'Cats.
New Hampshire remains unbeaten as its record now stands at 2-0-1. Siena now sits at 0-1-2 through its first three games.
Wingate notched the equalizer for the Wildcats to draw the score at 3-3 in the 78th minute of play. The goal came as a result of a Siena foul inside of the box that gave the Wildcats a penalty kick.
The Wildcats came out of the gate with an offensive prowess as they fired the first three shots of the game. Wingate ripped a shot in the fourth minute of play, but his bid was saved by Saint goalkeeper Ryan Vyskocil. Juniors Karl Frisk (Molndal, Sweden) and Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) fired shots just 10 seconds apart in the seventh minute of play, but Frisk's was blocked while Ellis' was saved.
The 'Cats kept the shots coming as senior Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) struck a shot that went just high of the net in the 16th minute of play. Ellis notched his second shot of the afternoon in the 19th minute, but it was wide of the net. Senior co-captain Andrew Chaput (Manchester, N.H.) nearly got the 'Cats on the board in the 29th minute of play as he connected with a cross in the box and headed the ball on net. Vyskocil was there to save the shot.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made his first save of the game in the 41st minute of play. Siena's Paolino Curto fired a shot on net, but Carpenter made the save to keep the score level at 0-0. In the final minute of the first half, senior Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.) headed the ball off a cross, but his attempt went just wide of the net.
At the end of the first half, the two teams were locked at 0-0. The 'Cats held an overall shot advantage of 8-5 through the first stanza.
Siena took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute of play on a goal by David Itoafa. Tom Allen started the play as he sent a cross into the box from the right side. Itoafa found the ball in mid-air with his head and put the ball away.
The Wildcats were quick to respond as Albers put away his first goal of the season. Junior Duff Thomson (Newton, N.H.) sent a cross into the box that Albers headed into the net. The goal game in the 58th minute of play. UNH capitalized on an odd-man rush at the 64:18 mark as Nabi registered his first goal of the season. Freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) fed a pass to Pauley who then found Nabi at the top of the box. Nabi ripped a shot that went into the net on the far right side.
Siena retaliated at 64:42 as Junior Rosero fired a shot into the top corner of the net. Peter Gadze and Nils Weddig each tallied an assist on the play. The Saints regained the lead in the 72nd minute on a goal by J.C. Obregon, making the score 3-2. In the box, a header by Junior Rosero from the right to the left side of the net was finished at the six-yard mark by Obregon.
Both teams kept pressuring to take the lead, however at the end of regulation, the match was tied 3-3 and headed for overtime.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 10-minute overtime period, sending the game to double-overtime. In the second overtime frame, the Wildcats tallied a pair of shots as Nabi fired one that was saved and Arling put a header just high of the net. At the end of the match, the two teams tied, 3-3.
Carpenter's record now sits at 2-0-1 on the season. He made one save on four shots faced. Vyskocil made five saves and allowed three goals for the Saints. Overall, Siena held a 18-16 advantage in shots.
The Wildcats travel to the University of Vermont next to partake in the UVM Windjammer Fall Classic with a pair of neutral games. The first game is set for Friday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. against Central Connecticut State University. The second game is set for Sunday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. against the University of North Carolina-Ashville.
