Broderick Scores Career-High Two Goals; Women's Hockey Edged 3-2 at Northeastern

BOSTON – Caroline Broderick (Marblehead, Mass.) recorded her first career two-goal game but the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was edged 3-2 by Northeastern University at Matthews Arena on Saturday afternoon. The best of 3 quarterfinal series is tied 1-1.
UNH, which won 2-1 in Friday's Game 1, is now 10-22-3 overall. NU, which outscored the Wildcats 2-1 the last four minutes of regulation, moves to 13-16-5.
Broderick matched her personal best of two points with her two goals. Her first tally tied the score 1-1 just 55 seconds into the second period and she lifted the 'Cats into a 2-2 tie with 1:55 remaining in the third. Ashley Wilkes (North Pole, Alaska) made 12 of her 31 saves in the final frame.
NU's Denisa Krizova recorded two points, including the game-winning goal just 30 seconds after Broderick tied the game at 2. Kendall Coyne also tallied a goal and an assist. Chelsiea Goll netted the other goal. Chloe Desjardins made 11 of her 20 saves in the second stanza.
With the score tied 1-1 late in the third period, Coyne circled behind the net to the right post and her centering pass deflected off the back skates of a UNH defender into the net for a power-play goal at 15:50.
Broderick forged the second tied of the game at 18:05. Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) curled off the right half-boards and sent a centering pass to the high slot, where Broderick's hard one-timer sailed inside the right post.
The Huskies regained the lead, 3-2, 30 seconds later. Wilkes stopped Coyne's initial shot from the right doorstep, but Krizova gathered the rebound at the top of the crease and lifted a shot under the crossbar.
Wilkes was pulled in favor of an extra skater with one minute to play but was unable to record a shot before NU cleared the puck to the neutral zone with 40 seconds on the clock. UNH recoiled and reentered the zone eight seconds later, but was forced back to the neutral zone with 25 seconds remaining.
NU was whistled for hooking with 15 ticks on the clock to give the 'Cats a two-skater advantage, but the Huskies won the ensuing faceoff and tied up the puck in the right corner to secure the victory.
NU skated to a 1-0 lead in the first period with an 11-4 shot advantage. The Huskies struck first at 5:12 when Goll jammed in a rebound at the left post. Melissa Haganey, with the initial shot from deep on the left wing, and Hayley Masters were credited with assists.
UNH generated its first threat at 12:05 when Carlson executed a pass through the neutral zone to Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.), who carried the puck into the left circle. Curtis floated a centering pass to the slot and a charging Nicoline Jensen (Rodovre, Denmark) batted the puck out of the air. Desjardin stopped the shot, however, and covered the puck.
Two minutes later, NU's Taytum Clairmont corralled a loose puck at the right doorstep and backhanded a low shot off the near post. Moments later, Wilkes made a stop against Jordan Krause. Less than one minute later, Wilkes kept the 'Cats within one goal when she denied Lauren Kelly, Shelby Herrington and Halle Silva.
The Wildcats carried 90 seconds of power play into the second period and converted that skater advantage into a goal to tie the score, 1-1, 55 seconds into the middle frame. The scoring sequence initiated when Hannah Armstrong (Keswick, Ontario) swung the puck from the right point to Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) at the left point. Schlagel ripped a slap shot that Broderick, positioned at the top of the crease, redirected into the open left side of the net for her first goal of the year.
In the fourth minute, Clairmont gathered a loose puck in the low slot by was denied by Wilkes. Three minutes later, Schlagel blasted another slapper from the left point. Desjardins made the save, then denied Margo Lund (St. Paul) off the rebound by diving toward the right post.
New Hampshire generated a pair of dangerous scoring opportunities late in the second stanza. Armstrong led a rush into the left circle and saucered a pass to the slot, where Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alberta) fired a shot that was knocked down and covered by Desjardins. One minute later, Boucher peeled back to the top of the right circle before snapping a diagonal pass to the low-left circle for Armstrong's one-timer. Desjardins slid across the crease to make the stop.
Northeastern went on its first power play of the game at 2:45 of the third period but UNH had a strong penalty kill and Wilkes made a save on the only shot she faced, which came off the stick of Heather Mottau.
At 5:30 of the final frame, Masters slipped behind the defense down the slot, but Carlson made a spectacular defensive play by sliding and making a sweeping poke check to deny a scoring chance.
With 10 minutes to play, Vilgrain was stuffed at the left doorstep and, from a scrum in front of the net, Armstrong pushed the puck through the crease and barely wide of the right post. Moments later, Lund led a 2-on-1 rush with Carlee Toews (Grand Prairie, Alberta) down the right wing but her shot from the faceoff dot was blocked by a defender.
NU was whistled for checking at 12:48, but UNH did not tally a shot before being called for interference at 14:07 to create a 4-on-4 situation and eventual power play that led to Coyne's goal at 15:50 and total of three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 45 seconds.
