DURHAM, N.H. – Junior midfielder A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team scored the only goal of the game for UNH as the Wildcats battled to a 1-1 draw with Marist College Friday night at Bremner Field.
The draw brings UNH's record to 3-4-1 on the year while the Red Foxes now stand at 4-2-2.
Albers got his first goal of the season in the 30th minute of play on a header. Jesus Tudela (Zaragoza, Spain) played a corner in from the left side and found an unmarked Albers. Albers connected with his head and found the back of the net for the goal.
Junior Andrew Chaput (Manchester, N.H.) got the offense started for UNH in the third minute of play with a shot on goal. The attempt was saved by Marist keeper Mark Rajovic. In the fifth minute, David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) nearly got the first goal of the game with a shot from the right side of the goal that hit the post and bounced out of bounds.
Steven Arraiano got the first shot on goal of the night for Marist, also in the fifth minute, but keeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) made the save. The Wildcats kept the pressure coming with a play orchestrated by Schlatter as he carried the ball down the side and played it into the box. Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) played a one-time shot on the pass but it went just inches above the crossbar.
Marist was quick to tie the game in the 33rd minute on a goal by Brandon Curtis. The play started with Matty Berman playing a ball into the box, finding the feet of Curtis. Curtis generated a quick play and found the back of the net on the far side.
At the end of the first half, UNH and Marist were tied, 1-1. The Wildcats held a 8-3 advantage on shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Tudela opened up the second half with a shot on goal, but Rajovic made a save on the play. Worra's lone save of the half came on the only shot he faced in the 56th minute of play. Dylan MacVane played a shot in from outside the box, but the keeper stood tall and made the save.
Each team tallied one shot on goal in the second half while the Wildcats posted five shots opposed to Marist's four. At the end of the second half, the game was destined for overtime.
In the first overtime frame, Will Rasid (Wilbraham, Mass.) sent a corner kick into the box that Chaput connected with first, but Rajovic made the save. Kevin Andino (Germantown, Maryland) launched a shot in from well outside of the box on target, but Rajovic made another save.
In the second overtime period, Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) and Schlatter tallied shots in succession, but both attempts went wide of the net. Marist's Brendan Gallivan recorded a header attempt, but it too went wide. After the second overtime frame, the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
UNH finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots through the match and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Worra made three saves on the four shots he faced as Rajovic made six saves on seven shots.
The Wildcats hit the road as they travel to the University of Massachusetts for an afternoon tilt on Sunday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
