DURHAM, N.H. – Junior midfielder Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) scored twice as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Hofstra University by a score of 3-2 Friday night at Bremner Field. Senior David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) scored the game winner in the 67th minute of play.
The Wildcats improve to 3-4-0 on the year while Hofstra falls to 2-3-2.
Schlatter's goal, his second of the season, came on a play that originated with Kevin Andino (Germantown, Maryland). Andino sent a ball to Jesus Tudela (Zaragoza, Spain) who flicked the ball over the top to Schlatter who was in the box. Schlatter trapped the ball, faked the defender and poked it past Hofstra keeper Brian McPartland.
Nabi got the offense rolling for the Wildcats in the 20th minute with a goal on a free kick from just outside the box. Nabi lined his shot up, bending the ball around the Pride wall and finding the lower right of the goal. It was the first goal of the season for the junior.
In the 37th minute of play, Nabi struck again for UNH on a one-time shot from inside the box. Keeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) blasted a goal kick up the field and connected with Tudela. He then played a pass in stride to Nabi who placed his one-time shot into the net for the goal.
In the 68th minute, Hofstra got on the board with its first goal of the night. Elliott Firth found the ball off a corner kick by Joseph Holland. The ball skimmed over the mixer and Holland trapped the ball and fired a shot with his left foot through traffic and into the net. Firth got his second goal of the game in the 88th minute on a rebound from a header by Kyle Poetzsch. Worra made a save on the point-blank header, but Firth buried the ball in the top of the net for the goal.
Hofstra attempted to get the equalizer in the 89th minute with Firth ripped a shot, but Worra came up with the big fingertip save and pounced on the rebound to end the threat. At the end of the match, UNH came away with the win.
Worra improved his record to 2-4-0 on the year as he made five saves on seven shots faced. Two of his saves came in the first half while the additional three came in the second half. McPartland made a pair of saves on five shots faced, one in each half.
The Wildcats remain home for their next contest as Marist College comes to Wildcat Country Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
