DEDHAM, Mass. – Jackie Hozza (Sinking Spring, Pa.) recorded two assists for the University of New Hampshire field hockey team Sunday afternoon, but Northeastern University scored with 2:19 remaining in regulation for a 3-2 non-conference victory at Dedham Field.
UNH, which had won four straight in the series vs. the Huskies, is now 1-5 on the season while NU improved to 3-2. The Wildcats recorded a 12-9 shot advantage and the penalty corners were even at 6.
Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) and Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.) were New Hampshire's goal scorers and Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) was also credited with an assist. Hozza's assists were the first points of her career. Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) made six saves.
Kate Carlson scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies, who also received single tallies from Kelly Dunn and Vanessa Pryor. Emma Lamison notched two assists and goalie Becky Garner stopped three shots.
"We did a great job of putting offensive pressure on them," UNH 24th-year head coach Robin Balducci said. "We had the possession, the corners and the shots but didn't put enough on goal to be threatening. Their last two goals, both on corners, were very well set up. So it was well done by them."
Northeastern threatened early in the game with two shots in the opening 70 seconds, but Tarbell turned aside both Pryor and Lamison. The Huskies generated consecutive corners in the seventh minute but did not record a shot.
Tarbell recorded her third save of the game – this time denying Emmy Zweserjin in the 13th minute – before the Wildcats produced their first shot of the game, which was sent wide of the cage by Flatley in the 15th minute.
UNH sustained pressure in the 23rd minute, when a shot by Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) was stopped by Garner but led to a corner and Nerbonne's shot was struck wide of the cage. The game's next shot was once again off the stick of Nerbonne in the 25th minute, but it too was wide.
New Hampshire converted a penalty corner into a goal and 1-0 lead at 28:06 when Flatley inserted the ball into Hozza, whose shot was redirected in by Nerbonne for her third goal of the season.
Nerbonne's next bid with just under one minute remaining in the first half was stopped by Garner.
The 'Cats, who recorded the last six shots of the first half, took a one-goal lead into halftime. UNH continued momentum into the second half as Carroll's shot was turned aside by Garner in the 38th minute and Gianna Bensaia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) hit a shot wide at 43:46.
NU began to wrest momentum away in the 46th minute, when the home team generated a corner and Zweserjin's shot was blocked away by Tarbell, who also stoned Marisa Dunn two minutes later.
The Huskies continued to attack, however, and leveled the score 1-1 on Kelly Dunn's goal at 48:24. They scored on the next shot at 51:10 and that go-ahead tally by Pryor prompted a New Hampshire timeout.
UNH earned another corner in the 60th minute and Nerbonne's shot was blocked by a Huskies' defender. With seven minutes remaining, the 'Cats had another opportunity on a corer, but Kellie Joyce (South Pomfret, Vt.) fired a shot that was once again blocked by the defense.
The Wildcats pulled even, 2-2, at 64:49 when Hozza's initial shot was stopped by Garner but Lehman scored on the rebound.
Northeastern immediately responded with pressure and produced a corner 16 seconds later in which Tarbell stopped Kelly Dunn. NU converted its next corner into Carlson's game-winning goal, which was set up by Natalie Stewart and Lamison, at 67:41.
UNH recorded neither a shot nor corner the rest of the way.
New Hampshire returns to action Friday, Sept. 19 (7 p.m.) at Providence College. The Wildcats' next home game is Sept. 21 (12 p.m.) vs. Hofstra University.
