DURHAM, N.H. -- Senior forward David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) netted the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lift the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against the University at Albany on Wednesday night at Cowell Stadium.
The win improves New Hampshire's overall record to 5-6-1 on the season and 1-2 in America East play. UAlbany falls to 3-6-5, 1-2.
The Great Danes outshot the Wildcats, 13-11, including a 9-6 edge in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) made seven saves to register the win for UNH in 90 minutes played, upping his record to 3-6-1 on the season. UAlbany keeper Tim Allen stopped four shots in the loss, dropping to 3-5-5.
Schlatter's goal, his third of the season, came from passes by sophomore midfielder Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) and junior forward Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). The two passes set up Schlatter at the left corner of the penalty box to rip a shot past Allen for the win.
UAlbany generated the first scoring chance of the match in the 17th minute. Sophomore midfielder Pedro Espindola blasted a low shot outside the penalty box. However, Worra was in position to make the save.
Midway through the first half, senior forward Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.) bolted up the left side of the offensive third for UNH. Bianchi sent a cross to sophomore midfielder Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) in the middle of the penalty box. The Great Danes managed poke the cross away and clear the zone.
UNH entered the first half with a 1-0 advantage.
New Hampshire looked to cushion its lead, creating quality scoring chances early in the second half. Despite owning a shot advantage early, the Great Danes registered an equalizer in the 63rd minute as freshman forward Afonso Pinheiro collected his fifth goal of the season on a header. Sophomore forward Leo Melgar struck a cross from the deep right corner of the field. Pinheiro jumped to redirect the ball past the hands of Worra for the goal.
The Great Danes pushed for a second game-tying goal in order to force overtime in the waning moments of regulation. In the last minute of play, senior midfielder Brandon Wilson blasted a header on target. Despite his efforts, Worra came up with the stop and helped the 'Cats capture their first conference win of the season.
New Hampshire returns to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 18 (7 p.m.) at the University of Hartford to continue conference play. The Wildcats welcome the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to Bremner Field on Saturday, Oct. 25 (7 p.m.).
