Cavanaugh Scores 17 Points in 73-51 Loss to Maine

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) recorded 17 points and seven rebounds as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated 73-51 by the University of Maine at Lundholm Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) finished with 10 points and junior guard Katie Ledden (Clark, N.J.) finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Maine was led by Adrianna Smith (32 points, nine rebounds) and Olivia Alvarez (16 points).
UNH moves to 6-12 overall and 0-5 in America while Maine improved to 9-10, 4-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH opened the game with a layup by Melero Sabat assisted by Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) to put the 'Cats up 2-0.
- Maine responded with an Alvarez field goal to tie the game at 2-2, followed by two more baskets to take a 6-2 lead at 6:03.
- DeChent drew the foul on a drive to the basket and made both free throws to pull the 'Cats within 6-4 at 5:18 and Cavanaugh followed with a turnaround jumper in the laine to level the score, 6-6, at 4:44.
- The Black Bears inched ahead, 10-6, in the next minute and held the lead the rest of the way.
- Smith's 3-pointer in the closing minute gave the visitors a 13-8 lead through 10 minutes.
- Maine forced seven turnovers for the Wildcats, who led in rebounds, 10-8, in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH responded early in the second quarter with field goals from Melero, Cavanaugh and Elizabeth Lavoie(Hampstead, N.H.) to trim the deficit to one point, 15-14, at 7:38.
- Cavanaugh silenced Maine's 11-point run with the Wildcats' first 3-pointer of the game at 2:28 to trim the margin to single digits, 26-17.
- Maine closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 31-18 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Melero Sabat scored a quick four points for the 'Cats to start the second half to advance the score to 36-22.
- DeChent and Maine's Smith traded 3's as the Black Bears led 43-25 at 7:08.
- The margin grew to 28 points, 54-26, at 3:51.
- Cavanaugh entered double digits in scoring – 12 points – with a tough 3-pointer late in the third.
- Ledden's driving layup paired with Kassidy Thompson's (Mullica Hill, N.J.) free throw pushed the score to 56-36 at the end of the third quarter.
- The 'Cats had their highest scoring quarter with 18 points, but Maine outscored UNH 25-18 in the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Melero Sabat backed down a Maine defender and scored two points for UNH to open the final quarter at 9:41 and Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) followed with a driving layup at 8:51.
- Cavanaugh hit her third 3-ball of the game to close the deficit to just 15 points, 58-43 at 7:53.
- Alvarez sunk her fourth 3-pointer at 5:13 to give the Black Bears a 20 point lead, 65-45 and Maine held UNH at arm's length the rest of the way.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Ledden's eight rebounds matched her career high that was established Jan. 10 vs. UMBC.
- Cavanaugh set her new season high in points, increasing from her 15 points vs. Merrimack (Dec. 5, 2025).
- Cavanaugh also matched her season high of seven rebounds.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with a 32-27 rebounding advantage.
- The Wildcats recorded a .463 field goal percentage (19 of 41).
- Both teams scored 30 points in the paint.
