UNH Falls to UMBC, 58-47

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) and sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) scored nine points apiece as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was defeated 58-47 by UMBC at Lundholm Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Katie Ledden (Clark, N.J.) finished with seven points and career-high eight rebounds. Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.), another junior guard, also pulled down eight rebounds and scored seven points.
UMBC was led by Jade Tillman (17 points) and Heidi Williams (15).
UNH moves to 6-11 overall, 0-4 in the conference and 5-2 at home. UMBC is 6-9, 1-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH quickly took a 4-0 lead on layups by Melero Sabat and Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.).
- The Retrievers knotted the score at 6-6 and 8-8 before DeChent hit a pair of free throws and Ledden converted a three-point play to give the Wildcats a 13-8 lead at 4:53.
- New Hampshire led 15-13 through 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- UMBC opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to build a 23-15 lead at 7:26.
- Kassidy Thompson (Mullica Hill, N.J.) hit a 3-pointer on the Wildcats' next possession to end the spurt and trim the deficit to 23-18.
- A layup by Alia Cordone (Davis, Calif.) at 4:32 and jumper by DeChent at 2:45 closed the gap to 25-22.
- Lavoie made a pair of free throws with nine seconds on the clock to advance the score to 30-26 in favor of the Retrievers.
THIRD QUARTER
- Melero's three-point play lifted UNH within one point, 32-31, at 6:26 and then a three-point play by DeChent leveled the score, 34-34, at 5:07.
- Ledden pulled down an offensive rebound and made the putback to put the 'Cats back in front, 36-34, at 4:02.
- UNH went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the last 2:30 of the third quarter to take a 42-39 lead through 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Kennedy Austin's steal and fastbreak layup gave UMBC a 45-44 lead at 7:00.
- Lavoie connected from behind the 3-point line to put the Wildcats back on top, 47-45, at 6:11.
- Alaina Williams tied the score at 4:11 and Heidi Williams gave the Retrievers a 49-47 lead at 3:22 that would not be relinquished.
- UMBC extended the margin to six points, 53-47, with one minute remaining and went 5-for-6 at the foul line the rest of the way to secure the win.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Cordone recorded her first two career blocks.
- DeChent and Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) led UNH with two assists apiece.
- DeChent also had a team-high two steals.
- UNH made 17 of 19 free throws (89.5%). Lavoie was a perfect 6-for-6.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH had a 36-31 advantage in rebounds, but the offensive rebounds were tied at eight and UMBC had a 13-4 edge in second chance points.
