BOSTON — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated to a win over No. 6 Northeastern University (13-4-0, 9-1-0 HEA) on Tuesday evening (Dec. 2), topping the Huskies 4-3 at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern jumped onto the scoreboard early, when Holly Abela collected a turnover in the neutral zone, skating in on Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) with a breakaway try, placing the puck through the five-hole for the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies doubled their lead 65 seconds later when Lily Shannon skated in through the left face-off dot, firing a tight-angle backhanded try and beating Blair glove-side to make it a 2-0 contest.
Through 20 minutes of action, the Huskies outshot the Wildcats 11-to-9, paced by three shots from Stryker Zablocki. For the 'Cats, Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) headlined on offense with a pair of tries on net.
New Hampshire pulled within a goal early in the middle frame, when Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) collected a loose puck in the Northeastern zone, skating alone in on Renna Trembecky, pulling her out of position and firing past her to make it a 2-1 affair.
Josie Linn (Excelsior, Minn.) tied things up midway through the period after taking a feed from Callista Printz (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the face-off circle, finding an opening in the goal and beating Trembecky on the power-play.
With just 47.1 seconds to play in the second, Northeastern regained their early lead when Morgan Jackson took a feed in the slot, firing over Blair's blocker-side to make it 3-2 through 40 minutes.
Following a Northeastern penalty late in the third period, the Wildcats found the equalizer off the stick of Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), who ripped a shot wide of Trembecky's right blocker to force overtime.
With two minutes remaining in the extra period, Sadie Makokis (St. Albert, Alberta) fired a try on net, deflecting off the stick of Northeastern's Jules Constantinople and landing in front of Harty, who tucked it past Trembecky to secure the 4-3 win.
Seven different Wildcats logged a point in the win, headlined by a career-best four point showing from Linn (1g, 3a) and a pair of assists from Makokis. Additionally, 13 different players landed a shot on net, including five players with at least three tries while six players ended the night with a positive plus/minus rating. On defense, eight different players blocked a shot, led by a pair from Printz, while Blair denied 35-of-38 shots faced, earning a .921 save percentage.
