WORCESTER, Mass. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated to a tie against Holy Cross (10-5-1, 3-4-1 HEA) on Friday evening (Nov. 21) at the Hart Center, tying 1-1. Holy Cross claimed the extra point in the shootout, winning 1-0 in three rounds.
New Hampshire jumped out to a quick start when Alex Therien (Ottawa, Ontario) found Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) in the low slot, who fired on the uncovered net to make it a 1-0 game. Holy Cross matched the opening goal 3:39 later, when Lulu Roarke fired home on the power-play to tie it up at 1-1. Through the opening 20 minutes, the Crusaders outpaced UNH on the shot chart 13-5, paced by three tries from Lane Lewis.
Neither offense could solve the opposing netminder in the middle period, keeping the 1-1 deadlock intact. For the Wildcats, Therien and Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) have paced the offensive output through the first 40 minutes, each logging five tries on net, while six different players have tallied a shot block.
In a similar fashion to the second period, neither team cracked the opposing defense in the third frame, leaving the 1-1 score in place through regulation. Holy Cross outpaced New Hampshire offensively in the third, outshooting the Wildcats 17 to four. Following a scoreless overtime period, the Crusaders and Wildcats skated to a 1-1 tie. Holy Cross picked up the extra conference point in the third round of the shootout, when freshman Naemi Herzig connected on net.
Nine different Wildcats logged a shot on net in the tie, led by six-shot showings from both Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia). In net, Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) turned away 38-of-39 shots faced, good for a .974 save percentage.
