INDIANAPOLIS – The University of New Hampshire athletic department earned an NCAA Graduation Success Rate score of 95 percent, including eight women's teams with a perfect mark of 100, in the most recent data that was released Nov. 19. UNH's score bested the national average of 90.
This year's overall GSR is the seventh consecutive year UNH recorded a mark of 95 percent or higher and the third consecutive year at exactly 95. The Wildcats were at 96 percent in 2022, 95 in both 2021 and 2020 and 96 in 2019. This is also the 11th consecutive year at 90 or higher with 93 in 2018, 92 in 2017, 91 in 2016 and 90 in 2015.
UNH is the America East conference leader in the eight sports that received a perfect mark of 100 – women's basketball, gymnastics, women's hockey, lacrosse, women's skiing, women's soccer, women's cross country/track & field and volleyball.
All eight programs with a perfect 100 have done so for multiple consecutive GSR reports: gymnastics (21 years), women's skiing (10), women's soccer (10), lacrosse (eight), women's basketball (six), volleyball (six), women's hockey (five), and women's cross country/track & field (four).
Overall, 12 of 16 UNH teams recorded a GSR equal to or higher than the sport's national average. Men's cross country/track & field led the way at +11, football was +9, women's basketball and women's cross country/track & field both at +8, men's basketball +7 and men's soccer +6.
Three Wildcat squads recorded a year-over-year improvement from the 2024 NCAA GSR report. Men's basketball and men's cross country/track & field both improved by +2 and football was a +1. Ten other UNH teams matched last year's GSR.
New Hampshire recorded the third highest overall GSR in America East behind the University of Vermont (97) and Bryant University (96). UNH was matched by UMass Lowell and followed by Binghamton University (93), NJIT (93), UAlbany (88), UMBC (87) and the University of Maine (84).
The four-year figures released this week reflect graduation numbers among student-athletes who entered college from 2015 to 2018.
GSR was created in 2002 in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students beyond what the federal graduation rate measures. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, even if the student enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter schools as transfer students.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate measurement of student-athlete success.
