Wildcats Fall to Bryant in Conference Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team opened conference play with a 61-49 loss to Bryant on Thursday evening at Lundholm Gym.
The Wildcats drop to 6-8 (0-1 America East), while the Bulldogs improve 8-6 (1-0).

- UNH continues America East play on the road against Vermont on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Patrick Gymnasium.

- UNH jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, holding the Bulldogs scoreless until the 5:04 mark.
- The Wildcats led 9-4 at the first media timeout with 3:20 to go.
- Senior forward Clara Gomez (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Derry, N.H.) hit back-to-back pull-up mid-range jumpers to put the 'Cats ahead 17-9 after one.

- Graduate guard Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y.) drained a step back 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down at the 7:02 mark, making it 20-11.
- The Bulldogs countered with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 20-20 with 3:14 remaining in the half.
- Senior forward Belen Morales Lopez (Alicante, Spain) converted a three-point play to give UNH a 23-20 advantage at halftime.

- Bryant scored the first five points of the half before senior guard Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) ignited the Wildcat offense, scoring five in a row with a 3-pointer and a layup.
- UNH held a 34-33 edge at the media timeout with 4:38 to go in the third.
- The Bulldogs came out of the timeout and went on an 8-0 run, taking a 41-34 lead.
- Sophomore guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) buried two free throws to get UNH within five (41-36) at the end of three.

- Bryant scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, forcing a UNH timeout at the 8:20 mark with the 'Cats down nine (45-36).
- The Wildcats cut it down to seven with a Lavoie layup, but the Bulldogs responded with back-to-back buckets, pushing the lead back to 12 (50-38) with 6:45 remaining in the game.
- Bryant took its largest lead of the game at the 1:27 mark, making it 58-40.
- The Bulldogs stayed in control to win it 61-49.
