UNH Edged 2-1 in Overtime by Merrimack in Stick it to Stigma Game

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior forward Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) scored a goal and freshman goaltender Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded 24 saves but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime to Merrimack College at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex on Saturday.
Both Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario) and Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jerome, Quebec) recorded and assist on the goal.
Blair made 14 of her 24 saves in the third period and another two in overtime. MC goalie Calli Hogarth also had 24, including three in the extra session.
Ally Qualley scored at 2:37 of OT to end the game. Maria Lindberg scored the other Warriors' goal.
UNH has an overall record of 13-15-2 and 10-11-2 in Hockey East and Merrimack is now 10-17-3, 7-13-3.

- UNH will travel to Holy Cross on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a 7 p.m. game.

FIRST PERIOD
- Merrimack had a shot advantage of 6-4 in the scoreless opening 20 minutes.
- Blair had a huge glove side save with 6:10 left in the period to deny Emily Oosterveld.
- UNH led in faceoff wins, 8-5, with Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) and Verrier each had three.
SECOND PERIOD
- UNH scored with 48.8 seconds left in the period when Kettyle shot the puck from the left point and Verrier tipped it in. Thiérus, with the pass from the right circle across to Kettyle, earned the secondary assist.
- New Hampshire had 10 shots on goal and Merrimack had two in the second stanza.
- Once again, UNH had more faceoff wins with 7 while MC had 6.
THIRD PERIOD
- Maria Lindberg scored Merrimack's first goal of the game at 7:14 of the third period.
- At 14:16, Merrimack received a two-minute penalty for slashing but Hogarth made two saves to keep the game tied at 1.
- Blair made 14 saves for UNH this period and Hogarth stopped 8 shots.
OVERTIME
- Qualley won the game for the Warriors with 2:23 left in overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Merrimack had a 26-25 shot advantage.
- The 'Cats had 13 blocked shots while MC had 8.
- UNH had the 25-18 edge in the faceoff circle.
- Both teams were successful on the penalty kills. New Hampshire killed two power plays and Maine one.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Saturday marked the UNH women's hockey team's seventh annual Stick it to Stigma game to promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The in-game silent auction of the special edition jerseys and donation by new sponsor M&T Bank benefitted Connors Climb Foundation and The Benny Fund, both of which are nonprofit organizations.
- Kelly recorded a team-high 10 faceoff wins and she led all skaters in that stat. Verrier had six.
- Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario) led all skaters in blocked shots with six.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 16-7-4 lifetime record against Merrimack.
- Four of the last five meetings have gone into overtime.
