Silver's 4.0 Sacks Lead #22 UNH to 17-10 Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Senior defensive end and captain Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.) equaled a career high with 4.0 sacks and grad student wide receiver Logan Tomlinson (Manchester, Conn.) scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the No. 22 University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon's 17-10 win against Elon University at Rhodes Stadium.
Silver finished with 5.0 tackles for loss and seven total tackles. UNH's defense had totals of nine sacks and 11 tackles for loss in addition to one interception.
Tomlinson had five catches for 39 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown, and also had a four-yard TD run to account for both of UNH's touchdowns,
Senior quarterback Seth Morgan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) completed 16 of 29 passes for 119 yards and the one TD. Junior wide receiver Joey Corcoran (Montreal, Quebec) was the top target with five catches for 62 yards.
Senior running back Isaac Seide (Everett, Mass.) was UNH's top rusher with 20 carries for 51 yards.
Grad student safety Wande Owens (Cooksvile, Md.) made a game-high 10 tackles, including one on the last play of the game.
Elon QB Jack Salopek was 17 of 29 for 185 yards and an interception. TJ Thomas, Jr. had nine carries for 78 yards, including a 39-yard TD.
UNH improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAA while Elon is now 1-5, 0-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- Elon outgained the Wildcats 144-16 in the first quarter to build a 10-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal by Jack Berkowitz at 10:56 and Thomas' TD run at 5:11.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH's defense stiffened in the second quarter as the Wildcats limited the Phoenix to 43 yards and made four tackles for loss with Silver recording 2.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage, including 1.5 sacks.
- Berkowitz missed a 42-yard field goal at 8:07 and then a 39-yard attempt at 4:02 to keep the advantage at 10-0.
- Elon started a drive from its 17-yard line with 40 seconds to play. A pair of incompletions sandwiched an 8-yard gain that set up 4th-and-2 from the 25. Zeroun Skinner (Orlando, Fla.) blocked Jeff Yurk's punt, Duncan Moreland (Beverly, Mass.) scooped up the loose ball at the Elon 17 and was tackled at the 10 to set up 1st and goal for UNH with 19 seconds on the clock.
- On the next play, Morgan rolled to his right, found Tomlinson in the back of the end zone and the PAT kick by Nick Mazzie (Boxford, Mass.) lifted the 'Cats within 10-7 heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH converted Elon's incomplete pass on a fake punt into a 6-play, 52-yard touchdown drive to take a 14-10 lead at 8:13. The drive was highlighted by a 24-yard pass play to Corcoran and ended on a 4-yard toss play to Tomlinson, who evaded three defenders to get into the end zone.
- UNH's defense forced a 3-and-out on a sack by Ryan Toscano (Bedford, N.H.).
FOURTH QUARTER
- Mazzie's 38-yard field goal capped a 12-play, 57-yard drive that consumed 7:05 off the clock and extended UNH's lead to 17-10 at 14:06. Seide had four rushed for 35 yards on the drive.
- On Elon's next possession, another sack by Silver forced the Phoenix to punt.
- The home team regained possession on a fumble, however, that set up 1st-and-10 at the UNH 17. On 4th-and-5, Silver's sack ended the Elon scoring threat at 7:51 to preserve the Wildcats' 17-10 lead.
- Elon drove to the UNH 30 with 2:21remaining, but an errant snap went for a loss of 19 yards back to the 49-yard line. On the next play, Brandon Perkins (Williamstown, N.J.) made a strip-sack. Elon recovered the fumble but it set up 3rd-and-33 at the Elon 47.
- On 4th-and 22, Duncan Moreland (Beverly, Mass.) intercepted a pass deep down the middle at the UNH 20 and returned it to the 50 yard line with 1:12 to play.
- Elon got the ball back on its 17 yard line with 50 seconds on the clock. Neil Politano (Jacksonville, Fla.) recorded a sack on first down and then combined sack by Flex Ruiz (Orlando, Fla.) and Cameron Garner-Young (Laurel, Md.) forced the Phoenix into 3rd-and 25 from the Elon 2.
- On 4th-and-16, Owens tackled Dalton at the Elon 30 to end the game.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- It was Tomlinson's first career rushing TD. He matched his career high of two touchdowns in a game; Tomlinson has two receiving TDs in a game twice.
- Garner-Young finished with 1.5 sacks.
- Sean Lehane (Milford, Mass.), who entered the game ranked No. 8 in the nation at 45.8 yards per punt, punted seven times with an average of 47.9 and long of 55.
- Mazzie, the reigning CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week, has made 6 of 7 field goal attempts this season.
- Toscano recorded five tackles and is UNH's career active leader with 249 tackles.

- UNH has a 7-2 lifetime record against Elon; all nine meetings have been since the Phoenix joined CAA Football in 2014.
