‘Cats Hang on in Overtime at NJIT, 74-67

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) notched his fifth consecutive double-double while graduate student Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, N.J.) scored his 1,000th career point to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to a 74-67 overtime win at NJIT Wednesday night.
With the win, UNH improves to 11-10 (6-3 AE) and NJIT falls to 6-15 (3-5 AE).

FIRST HALF
- Freshman Ridvan Tutic (Novi Pazar, Serbia) opened the scoring on the game's opening possession with a layup under the basket.
- The 'Cats jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the game's first three minutes with baskets from three different Wildcats.
- Graduate student Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.) drilled a three-pointer to double the UNH lead at 14-8 with 13:12 remaining in the half.
- NJIT responded with a 9-3 run to tie the game 17-17 with just under eight minutes left to play in the opening half.
- The two America East teams went back and forth over the next seven minutes with no team gaining a lead larger than two points.
- Derry drove to the rim with 29 seconds remaining in the half and finished the strong take over the defender to score his 1,000th career point.
- The Highlanders netted a jumper in the closing seconds of the first half to send the 'Cats into the locker room with a 28-27 lead.
SECOND HALF
- Tutic scored the first field goal of the second half just as he did to open the game, with no team gaining a lead greater than two for the first six minutes.
- Baker knocked down another three with 13:13 remaining to give the 'Cats a four-point lead, 37-33.
- A jumper from graduate student Matt Herasme (Chester, N.Y.) gave UNH their largest lead of the second half at 47-40 with just over nine minutes left to play in the game.
- NJIT made six out of their next seven field goal attempts, propelling them to a 14-5 run and giving them a 54-52 lead with 3:45 remaining in the second half.
- The Wildcats regained the lead, 56-55, with 3:00 minutes remaining after Baker netted his third long-range basket of the game.
- After a jumper put the Highlanders back in front, Baker banked home a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to put the 'Cats ahead 59-57.
- Just seconds later, NJIT tied the game 59-59 and the two teams remained knotted up after 40 minutes. sending the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
- After winning the opening tip, Daniels spotted up for a three-pointer and didn't miss as the 'Cats took a 62-59 lead to begin overtime.
- Juniors Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) and Kyree Brown (Oakland, Calif.) each scored layups to keep the 'Cats out in front, 67-61, with 2:14 left to play.
- Daniels netted a layup and two free throws to ice the game away and lead the extra frame with seven points as UNH held on to win 74-67.
NOTEWORTHY
- UNH is now 2-4 all-time when facing NJIT and has been victorious in two straight meetings. The Wildcats are now 1-0 when traveling to the NJIT Wellness & Events Center.
- Daniels recorded his fifth consecutive double-double and 12th of the season by scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
- Brown tallied a new career high on the glass with eight rebounds.
- Baker has now hit 4+ threes in four games this year to lead the Wildcats.
- UNH has now won three straight games, their longest winning streak of the season.
- The 'Cats are now in sole possession of second place in the America East, trailing Vermont by just 0.5 games.
- The Wildcats are undefeated when the game goes to overtime, posting a 2-0 record on the year.
