'Cats Fall on the Road at UMBC, 80-69

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) notched his ninth double-double of the season in an 80-69 losing effort against UMBC at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, UNH falls to 8-10 (3-3 AE) and UMBC improves to 14-7 (4-2 AE).

FIRST HALF
- After missing their first shot of the game, UMBC netted their next seven shot attempts but the 'Cats answered by hitting five of their first eight attempts, leading to a 15-11 Retrievers lead in the first four minutes of the game.
- UMBC continued their hot shooting by hitting four of their next five shots and going on a 13-3 run to build a 14-point lead, 28-14, with 10:36 remaining in the half.
- Both teams went back and forth over the next six minutes with UNH trimming the lead by three points after Daniels netted his 16th point of the half with a layup with 4:44 remaining.
- Graduate student Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, N.J.) cut the deficit to single-digits after a three-pointer with 1:17 remaining made the score 47-38.
- Craig Beaudoin of UMBC was able to steal an inbounds pass and make a last-second layup to end the half, 50-38.
- Daniels led the 'Cats with 16 points heading into the locker room, the most he's had in the first half this season. Colton Lawrence tallied 13 points to lead the Retrievers at the break.
SECOND HALF
- Junior Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the second half with a four-point play for the Wildcats, but UMBC answered with an 8-0 run to take a 58-42 advantage with 15:41 remaining in the game.
- A cold shooting stretch for the 'Cats led to the Retrievers building their largest lead of the contest, 68-47, led by two UMBC three-pointers.
- UNH continued to chip away with graduate student Matt Herasme (Chester, N.Y.) scoring seven consecutive points for the Wildcats on a 14-4 run, to trim the lead to 72-61 with 6:45 left to play.
- A layup from Johnson made it a single-digit deficit for the first time in the second half, 74-65 with 4:28 remaining.
- The Retrievers lead proved to be insurmountable and UMBC held on to win 80-69.
NOTEWORTHY
- UNH and UMBC are now knotted up 21-21 all-time when they match up with each other. The Wildcats are now 0-7 when they play in Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
- Johnson tallied his ninth consecutive game in double figures, the longest streak of his career and the longest active streak for a Wildcat.
- This was Daniels' team-leading ninth double-double of this season, tied for the 13th most in Div. 1.
- With his lone 3-pointer, Herasme has now scored from long range in 17 of the 18 games he's played this season.
- The Retrievers were led by Jacob Boonyasith who scored 14 points and went 3-3 from long range.

- The Wildcats return home on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when UAlbany comes to Lundholm Gym in a conference matchup at 7 p.m.
