DURHAM, N.H. -- Sophomore right side hitter Marisa Armer (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman middle blocker Kara Oxenknecht (Naperville, Ill.) of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team were named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning.
Armer, who was named the MVP of the Holly Young Invitational over the weekend, posted a team-best 34 kills with a .419 hitting percentage and helped lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 weekend in their home tournament at Lundholm Gymnasium. Armer notched 11 kills int the victory against St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday and hit at a .500 clip or higher in the other three matches. It marks the first time Armer has won the award in her Wildcat career.
Oxenknecht was named to the Holly Young Invitational All-Tournament Team and registered 21 kills, a .391 hitting percentage and 12 total blocks in four UNH victories. She totaled a career-high 11 kills in her second collegiate match for the Wildcats against St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday afternoon.
"I think it's tremendous that two of our players were recognized by the America East," said UNH head coach Christopher Feliciano. "Individual awards are results of good team effort and staying committed to our systems. It goes without question however that both players had tremendous weekend's and deserve this recognition."
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, September 2 at the Villanova Tournament with a 4:30 p.m. match vs. Fairfield.
