Goalies Combine for 34 Saves in 5-0 Loss to #10 UConn

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior goalies Nicky Harnett (Plymouth, Mich.) and Ava Thewes (Clarkston, Mich.) combined to make 34 saves but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was upended 5-0 by 10th-ranked University of Connecticut at the Whittemore Center on Saturday afternoon.
Harnett stopped 21 of 24 shots and was pulled at 7:47 of the second period when UConn took a 3-0 lead. Thewes played the final 32:13 and made 13 saves with two goals against.
UConn's Danielle Fox scored three goals for the hat trick and Natalie Snodgrass scored the other two goals. Megan Warrener made 16 saves for the shutout.
UNH is now 9-17-2 overall and 7-13-1 in Hockey East. UConn moves to 21-6-3, 15-5-3.

FIRST PERIOD
- UConn recorded a 13-4 shot advantage in the scoreless first period.
- UNH put the puck in the net 89 seconds after the opening faceoff, but the play was reviewed and it was deemed the Wildcats were offsides, which disallowed the goal.
- The Huskies went on the first power play of the game at 8:42 but Harnett stopped both shots on the UNH penalty kill to keep the game scoreless.
- UConn went back on the power play at 14:15 and Harnett backboned the Wildcats' penalty kill with three saves.
- Harnett denied Viki Harkness chance in a 2-on-1 rush to keep the game tied.
SECOND PERIOD
- UConn took a 3-0 lead with a 13-8 shot advantage in the second stanza.
- The Huskies struck quickly as Snodgrass one-timed a centering pass into the net for a 1-0 lead 16 seconds into the period.
- Fox scored consecutive goals 2 minutes, 6 seconds apart – at 5:41 and 7:47 – to extend the advantage to 3-0.
- UNH generated one of its best scoring chances between those two tallies when sophomore Avery Myers (Fargo, N.D.) ripped a shot from the left circle that beat Warrener but rang off the far post.
THIRD PERIOD
- The visitors netted two more goals in the final frame with a 13-4 edge in shots.
- Fox completed her hat trick 1:08 into the period when she finished Harnkess' return pass in the slot.
- Morgan Wabick kept the puck in the offensive zone at the high slot and slipped a pass to the left circle, where Snodgrass blasted a shot into the cage to push the lead to 5-0 at 15:48.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UConn finished with a 39-16 shot advantage and also had a 37-23 edge in the faceoff circle.
- UNH's penalty kill was perfect against three power plays. The Wildcats did not have a power play opportunity.
- New Hampshire blocked 12 shot attempts and the Huskies had six blocks.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Sophomore Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) recorded a team-high 10 faceoff wins and led all skaters with a total of 20 faceoffs.
- Brooks also led the 'Cats with five shots.
- Junior Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario) led UNH and tied for the game high with three blocked shots.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 49-22-5 lifetime record against UConn that includes 25-9-3 at home.
