Jayden Martinez notches 19 points in the losing effort against the Retrievers
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team dropped a 88-77 decision in America East play on Saturday night at UMBC from the UMBC Event Center.
The Wildcats drop to 9-9 overall (4-5 AE) with the loss, while UMBC improves to 11-10 overall (6-4 AE) after the victory.
Senior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) totaled a game-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting and 4-of-8 from the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Marco Foster (Chicago, Ill.) added 14 points (5-11 FG) and 4-of-8 on three's. Martinez needs just three points to become the 35th player in program history with 1,000 career points.
Sophomore guard Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 13 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Blondeau Tchoukuiegno (Montreal, Quebec) registered 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and nine assists on the night.
UNH and UMBC were knotted in points in the paint at 30-30, while the 'Cats shot 50% from three in the second half of the losing effort.
The 'Cats trailed 51-33 at halftime.
The Wildcats shot just 43% in the first half, but followed that up in the second half, hitting at a 55% clip.
L.J. Owens tied Martinez's game-high 19 points in the victory for the Retrievers. UMBC shot an impressive 72% from the field in the first half against the 'Cats.
UNH returns to action on Monday, February 7 at Stony Brook. Game time from Island Federal Credit Union Arena is 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
