WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Graduate student Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) broke a 59-59 tie with a layup with just 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team defeated Hartford, 61-59, on Monday afternoon at the Chase Family Arena.
The Wildcats improve to 6-17 (3-9 AE) and the Hawks fall to 2-21 (2-10 AE).
UNH trailed by 19 points at the half at 41-22, but then outscored the Hawks by a 39-18 margin in the second half to earn the win.
Senior Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Torres totaled 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks outscored the Wildcats by an 18-12 margin in the first quarter.
- After a layup by sophomore Bella Stuart (Clifton Park, N.Y.) to cut the Hartford lead to 18-14 early in the second quarter, the Hawks then outscored UNH, 23-8 to take a 41-22 advantage to the half.
- The Wildcats were outstanding in the third quarter scoring 27 points to six for the Hawks. UHH started the quarter with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 41-29. With the Wildcats now trailing 47-44 with 1:17 left, a layup by junior Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) and a 3-pointer by Widmeyer gave UNH a 49-47 lead going to the fourth quarter.
- With the game tied at 57-57, Widmeyer scored on a layup with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter. After Carmen Villalobos tied the contest with two made foul shots with 15 second left, Torres gave the Wildcats the 61-59 advantage with 11 second to go. A 3-point attempt by Najla Cecunjanin missed at the buzzer as the Wildcats secured the 61-59 win.
