Showunmi was a 2021 All-American.
NEW YORK, N.Y. – University of New Hampshire senior forward Tola Showunmi (Enfield, England) was drafted by Atlanta United FC in the third round as the 88th overall pick in the 2022 Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Tuesday night. Showunmi is the third player in program history to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft as Chris Wingate was picked by New York City Football Club in the third round as the 54th overall pick in 2017 and Josh Bauer was selected by Atlanta in the second round as the 31st overall pick.
Showunmi was a 2021 Third Team All-American. He was named the 2021 America East Striker of the Year, while he was also selected to the All-Northeast Region First Team and America East All-Conference First Team. He led the team with 10 goals and 23 points, while he was tied for first with four game-winning goals. He also had three assists. Nationally, Showumni was tied for 22nd for game-winning goals and 26th for total goals. For his UNH career he posted 11 goals and five assists for 27 points over 26 games.
Showunmi is now the fifth Wildcat to be a part of an MLS organization. Along with Bauer being a current member of Nashville SC and Wingate being drafted by NYCFC, Travis Worra ('15) signed with D.C. United in February of 2015 and appeared in 19 games during his four years with the team, and Dan Sirota ('00) was a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2002.
UNH concluded its historic 2021 season with a record of 17-2-2 (7-0-1 America East) and was No. 9 in the final United Soccer Coaches National Poll of the season. This is the program's highest national ranking in the final poll. This was the fourth season out of the last five years that UNH has been ranked in the final poll as the Wildcats were No. 14 in 2017, No. 22 in 2019 and No. 19 in 2020.
The Wildcats advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, falling at No. 1 seed Oregon State, 1-0. UNH earned the No. 16 seed and received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and defeated North Carolina, 4-1, in the second round at Wildcat Stadium.
UNH tallied its highest national ranking in program history in the United Soccer Coaches Poll at No. 4 on Oct. 12, 2021. UNH went undefeated overall in the regular season for the second straight time with a 15-0-2 record. The Wildcats won the America East Regular Season Championship for the third consecutive season with a 7-0-1 mark.
The Wildcats outscored their opposition, 47-10, as their plus 37 goal differential was second in the country. UNH led the nation with a .466 team goals against average. The Wildcats' .857 winning percentage was fifth in the country, while their 47 goals were ranked 10th.
