UNH Celebrates Outstanding Performances With Senior Showcase

Emma Woodhouse and Josh Bauer win Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year Award.
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Emma Woodhouse (Collingwood, Ontario) of the women's alpine ski team and senior Josh Bauer (Bedford, N.H.) of the men's soccer team were named recipients of the Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year Award at the University of New Hampshire athletic department's second annual Senior Showcase held Wednesday night on YouTube.

The broadcast, which was hosted by Associate Athletic Director for Communications Mike Murphy, celebrated the outstanding achievements of the 2019-20 season and honored the senior class. Along with the awards and the 2019-20 highlight video, the show featured messages from UNH President Jim Dean, Director of Athletics Marty Scarano, Elle Purrier (Class of 2018), Jackie MacMullan (Class of 1982), Mike O'Malley (Class of 1988), Brandy Fisher (Class of 1998) and Matt Evans (Class of 2012).

Award: Jim Urquhart Student-Athlete of the Year Award; Started: 1999
Given to the most outstanding senior student-athletes based on athletic success, community involvement and academic achievement.
Jim Urquhart: This award, which is the most prestigious student-athlete award at UNH, is named in memory of longtime UNH coach Jim Urquhart, who coached the New Hampshire men's lacrosse team for 17 years and the wrestling team for 11 seasons before taking the position of Associate Athletic Director of Event Management in 1997.

Woodhouse ranked No. 1 in slalom points among all East skiers this season. She was also named to the All-East Second Team. Woodhouse ranked fifth in NCAA Qualifying and sixth in Best-2 Overall among all East Skiers. She was a two-time Second Team NCAA All-American in 2019.

Bauer was the first player in program history to earn First Team All-America honors as he was also the first player in school history to be a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Bauer was the ECAC and America East Defender of the Year, along with being named the America East Tournament MVP.

Award: The Cathy Coakley Student-Athlete Community Involvement Award; Started: 2011
The award recognizes senior student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the University, UNH athletic department and the larger community with involvement in campus organizations, volunteer work, University or other athletic department committees and other service-oriented activities.
Cathy Coakley: This award is named in memory of Cathy Coakley, a former student-athlete (Class of '72) and coach at UNH, was the coordinator of student-athlete development. She was a lifelong battler for and supporter of Wildcat student-athletes.

The winner of this year's Female Cathy Coakley Award was senior Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) of the women's soccer team. Examples of her passion for community service were that she volunteered at the WaysMeet Center Food Pantry, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and was a Guest Speaker for Diversity Outreach as she presented in front of 300 High School students. Williams is a McNair Scholar as she is the first member of her family to attend college.

There were co-winners of the Male Cathy Coakley Award as senior Nelson Thomas (Plainfield, N.J.) of the football team and Jack Crawford (Mansfield, Mass.) of the men's cross country and track & field teams were honored for their community involvement.

Thomas was a President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the founder of Bench Out The Stigma. He raised funds for the Dover Children's Home During the holiday season. Thomas hosted several Mental Health and Mental Health First Aid Training sessions on campus for students, student-athletes and administrators. He also led the efforts to raise money for the America East Food Drive.

Crawford was also a President of SAAC. Some of the causes he has a passion for are Mental Health Awareness, Diversity & Inclusion, Food Disparity and Spread Respect. He was a part of a team that raised over $1,500 for Cornucopia Food Pantry. He was an organizer of the Better Together Games. He also mentored a sixth grader weekly at Oyster River and he escorted Special-Olympic athletes at the Miss Amazing Pageant.

Award: Coaches Award; Started: 2019
The award is presented to a senior student-athlete that has either overcome adversity, or is an unsung hero, or is leader of the team, or someone that has gone above and beyond.

Senior Allison Stefanelli (Loudonville, N.Y.) of the swimming and diving team won this year's award. She battled back from a possible career ending injury this season to be named the America East Diver of the Year as she won both diving events at the America East Championships. Stefanelli was a four-time America East champion during her career after she missed the championships during her freshman year because of an injury.

Award: Athletic Director's Award for Academic Excellence; Started: 2010
Given to the senior male and female student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.

Senior Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) of the men's track and field team won the Male Award for Academic Excellence with a perfect 4.00 GPA as an Accounting major. Speidel was named a Google Cloud Academic All-American in 2019 as he was the first UNH men's track & field athlete to make the CoSIDA-voted Academic All-America team.

Senior Abby Chapman (Beverly Hills, Mich.) of the women's hockey team won the Female Award for Academic Excellence with an outstanding 3.96 GPA. She is majoring in Entrepreneurial Studies and Finance. She is a two-year member of the National College Athlete Honor Society.

Given to the most outstanding female and male student-athlete for athletic achievement.

Bauer also won the Male Performer of the Year Award as he is only the second two-time All-American in program history. He recorded four goals and five assists for 13 points this season and earned All-Northeast Region first team honors.

Sophomore Anna Metzler (Regensburg, Germany) earned the Female Performer of the Year Award. She was named an All-American in the 400 IM as she qualified for the NCAA Championships with the 19th fastest time in the nation in the event this season (4:07.20). Metzler was named the ECAC and America East Swimmer of the Year. She was just recently named the America East Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year. Last year she won the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award at the Senior Showcase.

Given to a pair of Wildcat seniors for their commitment to strength and conditioning.

Senior Corinne Carbone (Medway, Mass.) of the swimming and diving team won the Female Tina True Award. Carbone won the Dave Alexander Coaches' Award at this year's America East Championships for totaling the most points at the event over her four years. She is a 14-time America East champion with eight individual championships and six relay gold medals. Carbone is also a two-time ECAC champion and the 2019 400 IM National Invitational champion.

Senior Evan Gray (Centreville, Va.) of the football team won the Male Tina True Award. Gray was tabbed to the CAA All-Conference First Team after carrying the ball 108 times for 646 rushing yards and four touchdowns this season. He ranked third in the conference in yards/rush (6.0) and eighth in rushing yards/game (58.7).

Given to the most outstanding female and male rookie for athletic achievement.
The Rookie of the Year Awards went to Max Brosmer (Roswell, Ga.) of the football team and Maura Verleg (Geldrop, Netherlands) of the field hockey team.

Brosmer was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats. The last time a freshman quarterback earned the starting job for UNH was Jeff Allen in 1974. Brosmer guided the Wildcats to a perfect home record (5-0) and a two-game improvement from 2018. He won the New England Writers Gold Helmet Award (Nov. 4), was a two-time CAA Rookie of Week (Sept. 23, Nov. 4) and was a STATS FCS National Rookie of the Week Honorable Mention honoree (Sept. 23).

Verleg earned NFHCA Northeast Region Second Team, America East Rookie of the Year, America East East Division All-Conference First Team and America East All-Rookie Team accolades. She was the only UNH freshman to start all 18 games, as she played 1,100 of a possible 1,130 minutes (97.3%) – more than any Wildcat. She tied for the team lead in assists as she was the team's anchor on defense as her stick skills and passing skills were a vital component in UNH's transition from defense to offense.
