Mike Murphy, now in his 16th year at UNH in 2025-26, was promoted to his current role of Associate Athletic Director for Marketing & Communications on Jan. 28, 2021. In this role, Murphy oversees the communications, marketing and Wildcat Productions teams in support of revenue enhancement, brand strength and visibility. The primary focus of his role is leading the strategy, planning and implementation of an aggressive effort to increase UNH Athletics awareness, driving gameday attendance and overseeing operation of the Athletics Department website, social media accounts and other front-facing content channels. Â
Murphy served as Associate Athletic Director for Communications from Nov. 2013 to Jan. 2021. He managed a team that handled all aspects of the department's day-to-day external relations strategies across multiple platforms, including digital, broadcast and social media. He collaborated with the associate athletic director of marketing and promotions and the associate athletic director of business development in executing the athletic department's core values of enhancing the fan experience, conveying the student-athlete experience, inspiring attendance at athletic events and increasing revenue generation. Further, he worked closely with Wildcat Sports Properties, UNH Athletics' exclusive multimedia rights holder, in both an administrative role and in an on-air capacity as a broadcaster.
Murphy joined the UNH athletic communications staff June 30, 2010, as an Associate Director. He has served as the primary media contact for the Wildcats’ football, gymnastics and skiing programs.
Murphy has led a department that has hosted the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Regional Championships (2011-13-15-17-19-23), NCAA Ski Championships (2017-21), NCAA Women's Frozen Four (2016-24) and East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship (2014-19-23).
Murphy has been part of the Wildcat Sports Radio Network since 1998. He became the radio Voice of UNH Wildcats Hockey in 2016 and subsequently won his sixth (2016), seventh (2017), eighth (2020) and ninth (2022) New Hampshire Sportscaster of the Year awards from the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). He was previously feted in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009.Â
Murphy, who hosted the UNH Coaches' Show on the radio for more than a decade, has worked in a TV broadcast capacity as the Voice of UNH Hockey on NESN and ESPN, in addition to serving as Wildcat football color commentator on NBC Sports Boston. Mike has also provided select play-by-play, color commentary and sideline reporting for ESPN3/+ broadcasts for a multitude of Wildcat Athletics events and was the host of the UNHWildCast, the official podcast of UNH Athletics. He serves as public address announcer for a number of UNH athletics events.
Previously, Mike served as the radio color commentator for UNH football games from 1998-2009, men's and women's basketball from 2001-17 and women's hockey from 2008-17. Other past on-air work for UNH Athletics includes hosting the former Inside Wildcat Country, a television program that offered fans an in-depth look at the inner workings of UNH athletics, on WBIN-TV and Fox College Sports.
He was named the EAGL co-Administrator of the Year in 2013 when he was the primary athletic communications contact for the eight-team league that included UNH, George Washington, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Towson.
Prior to joining the UNH athletic department, Murphy served as the Director of Media Relations and a Ticket Sales Executive for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Double-A affiliate located in Manchester, from 2006-10. In that media relations role, he wrote press releases and game notes, supervised press conferences, served as media liaison and helped maintain the team’s website. He played a significant role as part of the Fisher Cats’ front office that was awarded the prestigious 2009 Double-A Bob Freitas Award by Baseball America in recognition for achieving long-term success in Minor League Baseball.
Murphy, honored as the 2008 New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters Air Personality of the Year, was part of the Fisher Cats Radio Network broadcast team from the minor league baseball team's inception in 2004 through 2010. He was also bestowed the A.P. Top Play-by-Play Award in 2001 and 2008 and is a 12-time recipient of the NHAB Golden Mike Award.
Murphy joined the Fisher Cats’ front office in a full-time capacity as a Ticket Sales Account Executive in January 2006 following more than a decade of radio experience in the Granite State, where he served as host for the "Sports Zone" talk show on 107.7, the Pulse, and on WKXL radio in Concord.
Murphy is a graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1995.
Mike married his wife, Tish, in May 1995. They live in Concord with their son, Jason. Their daughter Katarina Murphy Doucette is a 2019 UNH graduate with a Hospitality Management Degree from the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics. She and her husband Elias are parents of Michael Doucette, named after his proud Pop Pop, and beautiful daughter Eloise.
