Ten 'Cats Receive America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award

BOSTON – Ten University of New Hampshire student-athletes have been named America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes in recognition of outstanding academic achievement through their collegiate careers.
Anna Burns (Falmouth, Maine), Michaella Conery (Concord, N.H.), Jill Conry (Bolton, Mass.), Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.), Melanie Lamar (Exeter, N.H.), Angela Meng (Beijing, China), Brianne Moss (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Morgan Sansing (Chester, N.H.), Kayla Sliz (Ajax, Ontario) and Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) are the distinguished Wildcats.
The Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate, received an undergraduate degree in Spring 2020 and have attended their institution a minimum of two years.
Burns, who earned both English: Journalism and Psychology degrees with a 3.91 GPA, helped lead the swimming & diving team to America East titles in both 2018 and 2020. She placed ninth in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the 2018 conference championship meet and 12th in both events in '20. Burns has been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll every year as a Wildcat and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Conery, with a 3.84 GPA and Business Administration degree, was a member of both the women's cross country and track & field teams. She was a two-time America East indoor track & field champion as part of UNH's distance medley relay team and was part of three conference championship teams in cross country. Conery was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice and made the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll every year.
Conry, who compiled a 3.93 GPA while earning degrees in both Business Administration: Accounting and Business Administration: Finance, had a breakout senior year with the women's soccer team in 2019. She started all 18 games for a defensive unit that recorded six shutouts and limited opponents to 18 goals, the fifth-lowest total in program history. Conry made the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll four times and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Hook, who has a 3.90 GPA and graduates with a degree in Economics, was a multi-event performer for the men's track & field teams. He ran sprints and hurdles, and also competed in a number of field events – high jump, pole vault and long jump. Hook was named to the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll every year and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Lamar, who received an Athletic Training degree with a 3.78 GPA, competed in throwing events for the women's track & field teams. She was named to the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll every year and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Meng, who posted a 3.82 GPA and with a Business Administration: Accounting degree, raced in sprinting events for the women's track & field team. She was named to the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll every year and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Moss, with a 3.81 GPA and Occupational Therapy degree, ran middle distance events for the women's track & field teams and was a member of the women's cross country team, which won three conference titles in her time with the 'Cats. She was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice and was named to the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll every year.
Sansing, who has a 3.91 GPA and graduates with a degree in Elementary Education, was a member of the women's cross country and track & field teams. She was part of three America East championship teams in cross country team and was voted to the All-Academic Team in 2018. Sansing was named to the conference Commissioner's Honor Roll every year and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society twice.
Sliz, who earned a Psychology degree with a 3.87 GPA, was recently named the 2020 recipient of UNH's Dean Williamson Award. As a senior captain of the 2019 field hockey team, she ranked second in points, shots and minutes played, and tied for second in goals. Sliz was named to the NFHCA Northeast Region and All-Conference Second Team in '19. She made both the NFHCA National Academic Squad and America East Commissioner's Honor Roll four times. She was a two-time selection to the AE All-Academic Team and was inducted into the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society Twice.
Speidel, who recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in Business Administration: Accounting, competed in throwing events – shot put, discus, hammer throw and weight throw – for the men's track & field teams. He was named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll every year as a Wildcat and voted to the America East All-Academic Team twice for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award was approved by the America East Board of Presidents in June 2013 and implemented in the 2013-14 academic year. In total, 421 elite student-athletes have been honored as part of the program, including 75 this year.
