‘Cats erase two Maine leads to salvage a conference point.
ORONO, Maine – The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team found itself in an early hole against the University of Maine Black Bears in game two of the two teams' weekend series. GAME RECAP
- Game two started similarly to game on with a 1-0 Maine lead at the first intermission followed by an early second period goal by New Hampshire, followed by a go-ahead power play goal by Maine.
- Maine's opening goal came 8:58 into the first period, a goal by Ida Press that put the Black Bears up 1-0.
- The line of Lauren Martin, Jada Christian, and Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) came out firing to begin the second period, as it only took the Wildcats 11 seconds to tie the game back up at 1-1.
- Maine answered back quickly 2:21 into the second period, on a power play goal that was initially stopped in the crease by starting goaltender Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) but the puck continued into the net for the Maine lead.
- The Wildcats got a gritty goal to level the contest for the second time; 12 minutes into the frame, Jada Christian stole a pass at the top of Maine's defensive zone. She tipped the pass, collected the puck, and skated in on net and snuck the puck low on Carly Jackson to tie the game at 2-2.
- Neither team was able to capitalize in the third, with Maine receiving a lengthy power play to end the second and start the third, and New Hampshire getting its own power play try 13:48 into the third. The game would go to overtime tied at 2-2.
- New Hampshire went on the penalty kill with just under two minutes remaining in the extra frame. Maine only attempted two shots on the power play, one hitting pipe, the other being blocked by sophomore Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario), as UNH held on for the tie.
