Senior captain tied career best in points, set personal best in rebounds in Sunday’s win
BOSTON – UNH senior guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) was named Monday the America East Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her performance in the Wildcats' games against NJIT on Dec. 5-6.
Torres averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the weekend split versus the Highlanders. In Sunday's 59-53 come-from-behind victory, the captain matched her career high with 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting and set a career best with seven rebounds. The 5-foot-7 guard played a team-high 36 minutes in Saturday's loss and another team-best 35 minutes in Sunday's victory, which marked the first career win for head coach Kelsey Hogan.
"She surprises me every single day," Hogan said of Torres in Sunday's postgame press conference. "She is doing everything we ask of her and so much more. Some of the finishes she had today, some of the tough shots down the stretch, she hit some really, really big shots for us. She's our leader... we go as she goes."
On Saturday, Torres scored 13 points and was 2-for-4 from the 3-point line when the rest of the team went a combined 2-for-13. She added two assists, two steals and was 3-for-4 from the FT line.
Torres is ranked first in America East in minutes (35.3/game) and second in scoring (15.8 points/game).
The Wildcats (1-3, 1-1 America East) are scheduled to play a non-conference game against UMass on Thursday, Dec. 10 (6 p.m., ESPN+) at Lundholm Gym.
