Jemma Woods Records First Career Win With Five-Save Performance

DURHAM, N.H. – Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) scored one goal and set up another to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory against College of the Holy Cross at Memorial Field.

Tia Raspante (Sandwich, Mass.) scored UNH's other goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jemma Woods (Frimley, England), in her second start and third appearance, earned her first career win with a five-save effort. HC goalie Marcia LaPlante made eight saves and Olivia Venezia had the Crusaders' tally.

UNH won its home opener to improve to 1-3 overall. Holy Cross is 1-2.

UNH returns to action with two home games next weekend. The Wildcats play host to #21 Stanford University on Sept. 13 (6 p.m.) and then Brown University comes to town Sept. 15 (3 p.m.).

1^st QUARTER

New Hampshire generated the first scoring chance at 3:18 when Raspante's rising blast from the top of the circle was batted away by LaPlante's blocker.
Holy Cross quickly counterattacked and Keely Smith's shot from the top of the circle was kicked aside by Woods, who had charged out from the goal line.
UNH took a 1-0 lead at 10:31 on van den Brekel's first goal of the year, as her shot from the top of the circle deflected off a defender's stick into the cage.

2^nd QUARTER

The Crusaders pressured early in the second quarter and generated their first corner in the 18^th minute, but Emily Devine's shot from the middle of the circle was blocked and cleared. One minute later on another corner, Woods denied Madeline Alderfer to preserve the one-goal lead.
UNH converted a corner into a 2-0 lead at24:25. The insert pass by Kayla Sliz (Ajax, Ontario) rolled over the stick of Tori Palumbo (Ayer, Mass.) at the top of the circle. Palumbo quickly corralled the ball, however, and advanced the ball to the right side, where van den Brekel put a shot toward the cage that was redirected in by Raspante.
Holy Cross generated a scoring bid in the closing minute of the half. Kristen Weber attached from the right wing but was denied on a sprawling save by Woods.

3^rd QUARTER

In the opening minute of the second half, UNH earned a corner. van den Brekel's shot from the right side was stopped by LaPlante, and then her shot off the rebound was also blocked away by the Crusaders' goalie.
Holy Cross trimmed the deficit to 2-1 at 37:16 when Alderfer's low, rolling entry pass from the right side was redirected by Venezia inside the far post.

4^th QUARTER

UNH pressured early in the final frame. LaPlante kept the Crusaders within one goal, however, with a stop against Jaiden Wittel (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and then two more on corners by van den Brekel and Sliz.
HC was awarded a corner in the 48^th minute, but Woods denied Alderfer's bid from the left wing.
Neither team recorded a shot on goal the rest of the way.
The Crusaders pulled LaPlante in favor of an extra field player the last 1:44 of the game.
