Purrier Finishes Third at USATF Outdoors, Qualifies for IAAF World Championships

UNH alumni Elle Purrier and Mike Shanahan both had top finishes at the USATF Outdoor Championship.
DURHAM, N.H. – Two former University of New Hampshire track & field athletes competed at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa this past weekend. Elinor Purrier '18 (Montgomery, Vt.) and Michael Shanahan '17 (Dover, N.H.) both had top-five finishes in the championship meet, with Purrier advancing to the World Championships this September.
Purrier, who excelled in the middle distance events while attending UNH, took third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:17.46. With her third place finish, and her world standard finish of 15:08.61 back in June, Purrier has officially qualified for the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar later this fall. Purrier also competed in the USATF indoor championships, placing third in the 2-mile run.
The IAAF World Championships begin September 27, 2019 and run until October 6.
Shanahan, an America East champion hammer and weight thrower, took fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 245'5", a new personal best. Shanahan was just under five feet away from the world qualifying standard (249'4"). His personal best while at UNH in the event came in at 227'5". Shanahan also competed in the weight throw, an event in which he holds the school record, during the indoor championship, taking eighth.
