The junior thrower joins the nation’s elite scholar-athletes.
AUSTIN, Texas – University of New Hampshire junior thrower Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) has been named a Google Cloud Academic All-American, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Speidel, who was voted a member of the All-America Second Team, becomes the first UNH men's track & field athlete to make the CoSIDA-voted Academic All-America team since the award began in the 2001-02 season. Most recently, fellow track and field Wildcats Elinor Purrier '18 and Laura Rose Donegan '17 were both honorees during their time at New Hampshire.
"Great kid, great part of the program," says head coach Jim Boulanger of Speidel. "He worked easily just as hard on the field as he did in the classroom with his academics. Just a wonderful person to have in the program. It's that simple."
Speidel, a business administration / accounting major, posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, and was just one of six perfect GPA's on the second team, out of 15 total members. This season Speidel was also honored with an All-Conference Academic Team appearance, and making the conference Commissioner's honor roll earlier this month. Speidel was also awarded the America East Elite-18 award at the indoor track championships.
This season Speidel was a part of UNH's strong throwing core which powered the men's track team to its highest finish in indoor track in four years, taking third in the team scores. Speidel scored in the weight throw with a distance of 53'5.5", one of four Wildcats on that podium. In outdoor track, Speidel set a new personal best in the hammer at 180'1", and was a top-5 finish at the conference championship meet, qualifying him for ECAC/IC4A's.
