New Hampshire Leads Conference with 79 Percent of Winter/Spring Student-Athletes on Honor Roll
BOSTON – A league-high 79 percent of University of New Hampshire student-athletes were named to the America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll or Commissioner's Honor Roll on Thursday. Overall, 68 percent of America East student-athletes achieved this academic status to match the record established a year ago.
Following UNH – which placed 167 student-athletes on an honor roll, including 100 on the Commissioner's Honor Roll and 17 with a perfect 4.0 GPA – was Binghamton University (75%) and University of Vermont (72%). The Wildcats' mark of 47 percent of its student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll was also a conference best.
New Hampshire had the highest percentage of representatives in two sports: women's basketball (92%) and women's track & field (90%). In fact, of 76 conference teams in the winter and spring seasons, only two tallied a higher percentage than the UNH women's basketball and women's track & field teams.
Twelve of 13 women's basketball players were honored and that included eight on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Women's track & field had 60 of 67 student-athletes record a 3.0 or higher grade-point-average in the Spring 2019 semester with 42 (63%) on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The UNH women's lacrosse team had 22 of 28 players recognized, and its mark of 79 percent tied for second best in America East. The men's basketball team recorded the second-best percentage at 71%, with 10 of 14 players recording a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Also of note, UNH women's swimming & diving checked in at 78 percent with 18 of 23 student-athletes making the grade, and men's track & field ranked third in the conference at 68 percent (45 of 66).
This accomplishment is the latest of UNH's academic highlights in the 2018-19 academic year. Most recently, six Wildcats received an America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award for graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. New Hampshire placed a league-leading 60 student-athletes on the 2018 America East Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Academic Honor Roll recognition is bestowed to student-athletes who recorded a spring semester GPA between 3.0-3.49. Commissioner's Honor Roll is awarded to those with a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
A conference-record total of 1,531 student-athletes who competed in America East sponsored winter and spring sports were named to an honor roll. Of that group, 852 recorded a GPA of 3.5 or higher to earn a spot on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. In total, a record 2,343 America East student-athletes earned Academic Honor Roll status in the 2018-19 academic year (higher than 70% of the 3,339 student-athletes).
America East is proud to have one of the most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country that honors more than two-thirds of its student-athletes for their success in the classroom, including its sports Scholar-Athletes, All-Academic honorees, Presidential Scholar-Athletes and Elite 18 recipients.
