QUICK HITTERS
The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.
Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.
UNH has a 9-10 lifetime record against James Madison and that includes 3-6 on the road. Last year at Wildcat Stadium, UNH won 35-24.
After a two-week absence, New Hampshire returned to the national polls this week at No. 23 in the STATS poll and No. 25 in the Coaches' Poll.
New Hampshire is ranked No. 10 in the Division I Football Championship Committee's top-10 list that was released Nov. 6. James Madison is No. 2; the list was made using selection criteria and results of games through Nov. 2. The announcement is part of the continued team evaluations that will culminate in the final bracket revealed Nov. 24 (12:30 p.m. on ESPNU).
This week's matchup at No. 2 James Madison is UNH's fourth consecutive game vs. a nationally-ranked opponent. The Wildcats are 2-1 in this current stretch.
Freshman quarterback Max Brosmer was named the CAA Football Rookie of the Week as well as recipient of the New England Football Writers/Grinold Chapter Division I Gold Helmet Award on Monday (Nov. 4).
Brosmer recorded career highs in completions (25), passing yards (276), touchdown passes (three), completion percentage (78.1%) and passer efficiency rating (175.26) to lead UNH to a 28-10 come-from-behind home win against No. 11 Villanova University on Nov. 2.
UNH's defense has climbed into the top 10 in scoring defense (124 ranked) at No. 7 by allowing a mere 16.6 points per game; the defense is also No. 9 in team passing efficiency defense (111.07). With three INTs last week vs. Villanova, the Wildcats are No. 4 in interceptions (13).
Villanova entered last weekend's matchup of the Wildcats ranked No. 13 in the nation in scoring (37.0 points per game) and was limited to 20 points – NONE in the second half.
Villanova was averaging 203.2 rushing yards per game, but was limited to 90 on 31 carries (2.9 yards per carry) by New Hampshire.
