The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.

Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.

The University of New Hampshire football program will honor its seniors prior to Saturday's one o'clock kickoff against Maine.

New Hampshire has a 55-44-8 lifetime record against Maine in the program's longest running rivalry. Last year, the Black Bears ended UNH's stretch of eight consecutive wins in the series with a 35-7 victory at Alfond Arena.

The Brice-Cowell Musket, named after former Maine coach Fred Brice and UNH coach William Cowell, was originally presented to the winner of the regular-season matchup in the late 1940s.

New Hampshire's seven-year stranglehold on the Brice-Cowell Musket ended last August when the Black Bears were 35-7 victors at Alfond Stadium.

UNH has a 17-5 lifetime record at Wildcat Stadium (opened in the 2016 season) and that includes 11-4 against conference opponents. The 'Cats are 4-0 at home this season.

UNH ranks second in the CAA – and No. 18 in the nation – in scoring defense (21.1 ppg), as well as third in both total defense (356.9) and rushing defense (140.0 yards/game).

UNH has outscored the opposition 71-34 in the first quarter. That is the Wildcats' highest point total of any quarter and the 34 points matches the lowest total by the opponent in any quarter. The 'Cats have not been outscored in the first quarter this season.

New Hampshire's defense limited UAlbany to 288 total yards of offense, and that included 101 in the second half, when the Great Danes were held to 27 yards on 15 rushes and 74 passing yards.

Junior kicker Jason Hughes has made 14 of 17 field goal attempts this year (82.4%); the 14 field goals marks the highest total by a UNH squad since the 2013 squad made 15 of 20 attempts.
