QUICK HITTERS
The biggest news out of Durham prior to UNH's first game of the season was the announcement that 21st-year head coach Sean McDonnell took an indefinite leave of absence for health-related reasons on Aug. 26.
Ricky Santos, who rejoined the UNH staff in March as associate head coach and quarterbacks coach, was named interim head coach Aug. 26. Santos spent the past three seasons (2016-18) as the QB coach at Columbia University. From 2013-15, Santos coached UNH's wide receivers.
UNH has a 5-2 lifetime record against UAlbany and that includes last year's 24-10 victory at Wildcat Stadium. In the most recent matchup at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium, the Great Danes won 15-0 against 16th-ranked UNH.
New Hampshire has scored points on its first drive in 5 of 9 games, and that includes 4 of 6 when the Wildcats receive the opening kickoff. Thanks to those highly-productive first drives, UNH has outscored the opposition 64-27 in the first quarter.
The Wildcats have scored first in 6 of 9 games (Holy Cross, Elon and Delaware struck first).
UNH ranks third in the nation in fewest penalty yards per game (34.78) and 11th in fewest penalties per game (4.44).
On the individual leaderboards, Dylan Laube is No. 11 in the nation in all-purpose yards with an average of 135.5 per game. Laube recorded 233 all-purpose yards (15 rushing, 43 receiving, 175 kickoff return) last week at James Madison to mark the highest total by a Wildcat since Nov. 26, 2016 (Dalton Crossan, 240 yards).
Laube had a school-record eight kickoff returns (for 175 yards) last week at James Madison. The previous UNH benchmark of seven kickoff returns in a game was held by Dontra Peters (Sept. 10, 2011 at Lehigh).
Junior kicker Jason Hughes is No. 12 in field goals per game (1.44) and 16th in field goal percentage (.813). Hughes has made 13 of 16 field goal attempts this year. He is 7 of 8 on attempts of 40+ yards this season and that includes a 44-yarder last week at #2 James Madison, as well as three 45-yarders.
New Hampshire ranks second in the CAA in scoring defense (20.8 ppg).
UNH is tied for second in the CAA standings with both UAlbany and Richmond at 4-2.
