Senior defensive end feted for combined athletic, academic accomplishments
WESTLAKE, Ohio – Kyle Reisert (Plymouth, N.H.), a senior on the University of New Hampshire football team, was named Friday to the 2018 Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team.
Football players from all FCS institutions are eligible for the award. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. They must have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at their designated position.
"One of the most important responsibilities that the FCS ADA has is the selection of the annual Academic All-Star Team," said current FCS ADA president Bill Smith, director of athletics at Bryant University. "This group of young men are some of the best and brightest football players and scholars in the country. They have been leaders on their individual campuses and have excelled in the classroom, their communities and on the gridiron. They truly exemplify FCS football and now we have the honor of naming them to the 2018 Academic All-Star Team."
Reisert, a mechanical engineering major with a cumulative 3.97 grade point average, was previously recognized as a member of the 2018 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Google Cloud Academic All-America NCAA Division I First Team, which made him the first two-time academic All-American in school history. Further, he received an American Society for Engineering Education SMART Scholarship that includes a two-year appointment at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard through the United States Department of Defense. The Plymouth, N.H., native was honored by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) as a semifinalist for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy awarded to the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
In 2017-18, Reisert was named the CAA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The two-time Chi Alpha Sigma National College Honor Society inductee is also a four-time member of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll (2014-17).
On the field, the defensive end rallied back from two devastating injuries that cost him 11 of a possible 17 games between 2017-18. After a fractured foot sidelined him for the first four games of his junior season, he started six games before sustaining a catastrophic knee injury Nov. 11, 2017, that halted his season and nearly ended his career.
After missing the first three games of the 2018 campaign and being limited to only a few special-teams snaps in UNH's fourth contest at Elon (Sept. 29), Reisert returned to action with four tackles, which included 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack, against Holy Cross on Oct. 6 at Wildcat Stadium. Two weeks later, the Plymouth, N.H., native scooped up a fumble and rumbled 55 yards for a touchdown in a home game against No. 24 Delaware. In seven games, he totaled 15 tackles (11 solo), 4.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks.
The UNH football program, which celebrated the 125th anniversary of its first game in 2018, has advanced to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs in 14 of the past 15 seasons. With 98 career CAA victories, head coach Sean McDonnell is the winningest active coach in the league and No. 3 all-time. He is one conference win ahead of his mentor, NFF College Football Hall of Famer and Wildcat coaching legend Bill Bowes.
