Wildcats Earn Bye to Semifinals with 1-0 Win at Vermont

The Wildcats will be the No. 2 seed and host a semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 7.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Jack Doherty (Meriden, N.H.) scored the game winning goal as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Vermont, 1-0, on Wednesday night in the regular season finale. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-3-2 (4-2-1 AE) and clinch a bye to the semifinals of the America East Tournament as the No. 2 seed, while the Catamounts fall to 11-7-0 (4-3-0 AE) and will be the No. 4 seed.

- The No. 2 seeded Wildcats return to action Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m., when they play an America East Tournament semifinal game at Wildcat Stadium. The six-team America East Tournament starts on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the quarterfinals. UNH will play the winner of the No. 3 seed UMass Lowell and No. 6 seed Albany game, while No. 1 seed Stony Brook will play the winner of the No. 4 seed Vermont and No. 5 seed UMBC game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Catamounts took the first shot on goal of the game in the eighth minute (7:41) when Geo Alves had his attempt saved by red-shirt freshman goalie Tomeu Pocovi (Mallorca, Spain).
- Less than a minute later, junior Antonio Colacci (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded the first attempt on goal for the Wildcats but Clay Thomas made the save.
- In the 20th minute (19:58), Doherty chipped the ball from 18 yards out to the far post to give UNH a 1-0 lead.
- Orn Arnason almost tied the game for the Catamounts but his shot in the 35th minute hit the post.
- The UNH defense only allowed one shot on goal in the second half as Pocovi made a save in the 57th minute on an attempt by Justin Freitas.
- The Wildcats kept the Catamounts off the scoreboard to earn the win and record their eighth shutout of the season.
- Pocovi made five saves to earn his first collegiate victory, while Clay Thomas posted two saves.
- Vermont outshot UNH, 14-6, while the Catamounts had five shots on goal and the Wildcats took three.
- The Catamounts took seven corner kicks, while the Wildcats recorded one.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Doherty has two goals this season and they are both game winners. He also scored the game winner in the 1-0 victory versus UMBC on Sept. 22. He now has five career goals and three game winners.
- This was Pocovi's first collegiate start, victory and shutout.
- The Wildcats will be looking to win their first ever America East Tournament championship.
