Sophomore Midfielder Scored Three Goals vs. Dartmouth to Lead 'Cats to 5-1 Win in Regular-Season Finale
BOSTON – Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands), a sophomore midfielder on the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, was named America East Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
van den Brekel scored a career-high three goals for a personal best of six points to lead UNH to a 5-1 win against Dartmouth College in Sunday afternoon's regular-season finale. She scored consecutive goals 88 seconds apart (at 20:51 and 22:19) to quickly extend the Wildcats' lead from 1-0 to 3-0.
She struck again 3:46 into the second half to once again put momentum in UNH's favor with a 4-1 lead. van den Brekel finished with a game-high five shots, all on goal.
In UNH's 1-0 win vs. nationally-ranked UAlbany on Oct. 26, van den Brekel recorded two of the team's four shots (both on goal).
van den Brekel has scored five goals the last four games to vault into a tie for the team lead in goals this season with six. She is also UNH's leader in points (14) and shots (35).
New Hampshire begins postseason play Nov. 1 at the America East Championships. As the East Division fourth seed, the Wildcats play West Division top seed and host Stanford University in the quarterfinals. Start time is 4 p.m. Eastern.
