STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
Danielle Gajewski, women's outdoor track & field
Danielle, a sophomore from Danville, N.H., ran her fastest time ever in the 800-meter dash to earn second place among 31 competitors at the Ocean State Invitational, which was held at Brown Stadium on April 15. The second-year runner crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 10.20 seconds.
The field of 31 was comprised of runners from seven other schools, including Boston College and Providence College. Danielle ran in section 1, which was the fastest-seeded heat and she recorded a time that qualifies to compete at both the New England and ECAC championships.
Danielle had established her previous personal-best time in the 800m when she recorded a time of 2:12.37 in the season opener at the Colonial Relays, which were held March 31-April 2 at the College of William & Mary. Then in last week's quad meet against the University of Maine, UMass Lowell and College of the Holy Cross, Danielle was part of the first place 4x100m relay team.
Back in the 2015-16 indoor season, Danielle broke the UNH 500-meter record by 0.17 seconds with a time of 1:14.17 at the New England Championships; that second-place effort supplanted the benchmark previously set by Megan Donohue in 2011.
Danielle was the 800m America East champion with a personal-best time of 2:14.23. In that conference championship meet, she also ran a leg on the winning distance medley relay that recorded a school-record time of 11:28.56.
In her first season as a collegian, she placed fifth in the 500m at both the 204-15 America East Indoor and New England championships. In the 2015 outdoor season, she was part of the fifth-place quartets in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
Drew Piazza, men's outdoor track & field
Drew, a junior from Danvers, Mass., raced to a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 6.25 seconds in the mile run at the Ocean State Invitational that was held at Brown Stadium on April 15. He placed fifth overall – second among collegians – in a field of 33 runners.
His mark of 4:06.25, which is an IC4A-qualifying standard, was less than a second off the time of the top collegian, who placed fourth overall at 4:05.39, and bested his previous best time by 4.0 seconds.
One week earlier in a home quad-meet against UMass Lowell, Maine and Holy Cross, Drew won the 400-meter dash in 49.69 seconds. In the April 1 season opener at the Colonial Relays, which were held at College of William & Mary, Drew raced to second place in the 800m by crossing the finish line in 1:48.90.
Drew was the No. 10 seed in the 800m at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and ran a time of 1:47.97 in the preliminaries to place eighth and miss the cut for the finals by .06 seconds.
Earlier in the season, Drew was the America East conference champion in the mile (4:10.25) and ran a leg in the winning distance medley relay. He went on to win the 800m at the New England Championships with a time of 1:49.52 prior to competing at the NCAAs. He earned the 10 seed with a time of 1:47.28.
Drew also had a strong cross country season, which was capped with a third-place finish at the 2015 America East Championships.
In the 2015 outdoor track & field season, Drew was the 800m conference champion with a time of 1:50.45. He went on to win that event at the IC4A meet with an improved mark of 1:48.62. Drew competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round and was clocked in 1:48.05 to advance out of the preliminary heat, but did not move on to the national meet.
One year earlier as a freshman, Drew took fifth place in the 800m at the America East Championships and was part of the runner-up 4x800m relay team. He followed that with seventh place at New Englands and third at the IC4As (both in the 800m).
