DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) scored a goal with 12 minutes left in regulation, but the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team was defeated by the University of Vermont, 3-1, Wednesday night, at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats finished the season with a 10-4-3 overall record and 3-3-1 record in the America East. The conference record secures the sixth seed for the America East Championships as the 'Cats will take on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Saturday, Nov. 7 (7 p.m.) in the quarterfinal round.
The Catamounts improved its record to 9-6-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference, securing a first round bye with the win as the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Down 2-0 with 12 minutes to play, senior Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.) placed a through ball onto the feet of Arling who took two dribbles and finished bottom left to reduce the deficit to 2-1 late, but the rally wasn't enough.
The Wildcats were led by Arling who scored his fourth career goal. Both junior Duff Thomson (Newton, N.H.) and classmate Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) recorded three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) made one save in net, solidifying his regular season record at 3-1-0 overall.
Vermont's junior Stefan Lamanna and classmate Brian Wright each scored a goal and recorded an assist on the night. Junior Bernard Yeboah scored his fourth goal in the season. Junior Goalkeeper Greg Walton made six key saves in net.
To open the game, Vermont's Wright picked up the ball 30 yards out and took two dribbles before ripping a shot top right for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
New Hampshire rifled two more shots in the remainder of the first half, as Wingate nearly touched one past the keeper in the 30th minute.
The second half was mostly UNH in the Vermont zone. The Wildcats held a 7-4 shot advantage and a 3-0 corner kick lead in the final frame. In the midst of the Wildcat pressure, the Catamount's Yeboah finished a header over the keepers mitts on a cross from Lamanna to take a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute.
Following the first goal, New Hampshire went on the offensive to score the equalizer with back-to-back shots saved by keeper Greg Walton, but was stopped both times.
The dagger came in the 85th minute on a two on one breakaway for the Catamounts. Wright dished right to Lamanna who shot a slow roller into the net for the final score.
