DURHAM, N.H. – Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.), Kellie Joyce (South Pomfret, Vt.) and Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) all factored in multiple goals to lead the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 4-1 victory against Dartmouth College at Memorial Field.
UNH, which paid tribute to seniors Maegan Grew (Hampton Falls, N.H.), Carlie Tarbell (Wakefield, Mass.) and Joyce prior to the start of the intrastate battle, has won 5 of 6 to end the regular season with an 8-11 overall record. Dartmouth lost its fourth consecutive game to fall to 5-11.
Flatley scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season, Nerbonne tallied her 11th goal of the season and added an assist, and Joyce assisted on one of each of their goals to lead the Wildcats' attack. Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.) scored UNH's other goal and Aggie Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) was credited with an assist.
Tarbell played a total of 55 minutes, 5 seconds in two stints as she exited the game at 46:28 and reentered at 61:23 to close her final game at Memorial Field on the turf with her classmates. Tarbell was credited with six saves and allowed the Big Green goal. Melissa Rize played 14:55 in relief and stopped one shot.
Dartmouth goalie Ellen Meyer made nine of her 11 saves in the first half. Julia Donald potted the Big Green's goal.
Flatley scored on the game's first shot to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead at 3:25. From the top of the circle, Joyce struck the ball toward the left post and Flatley redirected it into the cage.
UNH was awarded a penalty corner in the ninth minute and Nerbonne's shot was stopped by Meyer. Flatley corralled the rebound deep on the left side but her shot was blocked in front by a DC defender.
The Wildcats garnered another penalty corner one minute later, and this time a shot off the stick of Jackie Hozza (Sinking Spring, Pa.) from the left side went wide of the far post.
In the 12th minute, Dartmouth attacked in transition and Janine Leger's low blast from the top of the circle was kick away by Tarbell. Two minutes later at the other end of the field, Meyer denied Ashley Mendonca (Brampton, Ontario) but it led to another UNH corner. Instead of taking the direct shot at the top of the circle, Mendonca sidestepped a charging defender and shifted past another to the middle before flicking a shot that Meyer once again steered away.
The 'Cats continued to pressure and a corner in the 17th minute yielded Nerbonne's shot that was blocked by a defender. Moments later, Meyer made a save against Lehman.
New Hampshire outshot the guests 3-1 and had a 2-0 corner advantage the next 14 minutes, then scored off a rebound to build a 2-0 lead at 33:10. Joyce's initial shot was stopped by Meyer, but Lehman collected the rebound in the middle of the circle and her shot toward the left side ricocheted off a Big Green defender into the cage.
In the closing minute of overtime, Meyer recorded her ninth save by turning aside Joyce. UNH quickly regained possession just outside the 25 line and was awarded a corner before time expired in the half.
Sutherland inserted the ball to the top of the circle and Joyce stopped the ball for Nerbonne, whose hard shot was immediately deflected off a defender's stick but continued to rise and went in under the crossbar for a 3-0 lead at 35:00.
UNH took a 16-2 shot advantage and 7-0 edge in corners into halftime.
Dartmouth converted on the second of its consecutive corners early in the first half to trim the deficit to 3-1 at 37:04. Brooke Van Valkenburg's shot was stopped by Tarbell, but Donald pulled in the rebound at the right post and deposited a shot into the cage.
The Wildcats reestablished a three-goal lead, 4-1, at 42:01. Meyer made a kick save on Nerbonne's shot from the top-right side, but the UNH sophomore regained possession and her next shot attempt was redirected into the cage by Flatley.
The Big Green attempted to regain momentum with Tarbell having to make a save on a shot off Savage's stick in the 45th minute, and moments later Jenna Schwenk fired a shot that UNH's defense blocked and cleared.
Rize entered the game in goal in the 47th minute, and six minutes later Taylor Rideout (Barrington, R.I.) made a diving effort in the circle to redirect an entry pass just wide of the left post.
DC earned a corner in the 55th minute, but Joanne Nazareth's shot went wide. Two minutes later at the other end of the field, Rideout's bid from the right side was also off target.
Rize made her only save of the game – against Donald – at 60:48 and exited the game 35 seconds later.
Tarbell was immediately tested upon reentry, as she turned aside shots by Leger and Becker. Dartmouth did not record another shot the rest of the way however, as UNH controlled possession a majority of the final eight minutes.
In the second half, the Big Green tallied the advantage in both shots (9-5) and corners (4-0). UNH still had the overall edge at 21-11 and 7-4, respectively.
New Hampshire is the No. 2 seed of the upcoming America East Championship. The defending champions begin tournament play Thursday, Nov. 6 (4 p.m.) against the University of Maine in a semifinal game at the University at Albany.
