VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO UMBC, 3-2

Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.) registered a team-high 18
kills, however the University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell
to America East foe UMBC, 3-2, on Friday night at RAC Arena. The
Wildcats move to 8-12 overall, 0-3 in America East. UMBC is now
10-7, 2-0 AE. The set scores were 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25 and
15-10.
In addition to Fogarty, Justine Elliott
(Mitchellville, Md.) tallied eight kills and added four blocks.
Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) paced the Wildcat
offense with 44 assists. Defensively, Sara Heldman
(Greenwood, Ind.) had 27 digs, while Kirsten Bates
(Calgary, Alberta) had a well-balanced night for New Hampshire with
11 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and two aces.
In the first set, UMBC went to a 6-3 lead. UNH cut it to 7-6 with a
3-1 run. The Retrievers rattled off six-straight points to make it
13-6. UMBC led it 21-15 and extended its lead with three-straight
points to make it 24-15. UNH would fight off set point three times
before dropping the opening set. UMBC had a match-best 17 kills and
hit at a .361 clip during the set. The second set was back and
forth early as UNH held a 7-6 advantage before six-straight
Retriever points made it 12-7. UMBC led it 16-9 until a UNH run cut
it to 16-13. The Retrievers were holding a 22-18 edge that the
Wildcats cut into with three straight points, but New Hampshire
could not come all the way back as UMBC earned the 25-23 set
victory. With its back against the wall, UNH responded by capturing
the next two sets to force a fifth set. In the third set, the teams
played even in the early going. Trailing 12-11, UNH went on an 8-1
run to build a 19-13 lead. UMBC rallied with four-straight to cut
it to 19-17 and would trim it to one eventually at 22-21, but the
Wildcats answered by scoring three of the final four points to earn
the set. The fourth set was also close in the early going as UNH
led it 13-12 and added to its lead with a 5-1 run that made it
18-13. The Retrievers responded with a 5-2 run to cut it to 20-18,
however the Wildcats scored the final five points of the set to
force a fifth set. In the final set, UMBC was holding on to a 7-6
edge before a 5-1 spurt made it 11-7. A pair of UNH points cut the
lead to 11-9, but in the end the Retrievers scored four of the
final five points to capture the match.
UNH returns to action when it travels to Stony Brook on Sunday,
Oct. 11 (1 p.m.). New Hampshire's next home match is Sat.
