Lions outlast Wildcats, 16-14, in final set at Texas A&M Invitational
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas — In a see-saw battle that featured 12 lead changes and an extended fifth set, the UNH volleyball team eventually dropped a 3-2 decision to Loyola Marymount on Thursday afternoon at Reed Arena as part of the Texas A&M Invitational. The set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 16-14.
Junior Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) led UNH (6-5) with 14 kills, six digs, and six block assists, totaling 17 points. Freshman Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) added 19 kills and six blocks, while junior Jessica Shattles (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) doled out 33 assists and notched 18 digs. Senior Avery LePore (Franklin, Tenn.) locked down the back row with 20 digs and added a service ace.
Madeline Boerstra paced LMU (2-5) with 22 kills and 14 digs, while Nicole Schuetz hit .524 with 11 kills and two blocks. Setter Delfina Schuh recorded 32 assists and 17 digs, and Cecily Bramschreiber led all players with 32 digs.
•The decisive fifth set was a back-and-forth battle that featured nine ties and four lead changes, as Loyola Marymount escaped with a 16-14 win.
•New Hampshire jumped out to a 6-4 lead behind a kill from Chertock, a block by junior Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) and a service ace from sophomore Ellery Singleton (Menlo Park, Calif.).
•Grier and Chertock continued to anchor the front line, combining for a block and a pair of kills to push UNH ahead 8-5.
•LMU responded with a 4-0 run, capitalizing on a UNH service error and a pair of kills from Madeline Boerstra and Sophie Stephenson to take a 9-8 lead.
•The Wildcats regained momentum with a kill from Brenton and a block by Chertock, tying the set at 10-10.
•The teams traded points down the stretch, with senior Lindsey Kriendler (Houston, Texas) and Grier delivering clutch kills to keep UNH alive.
