
Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week: Ruth White and Liam McGovern

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Ruth White (Orono, Maine) of the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team and junior Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) of the UNH men's track & field team were named the Service Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week on June 3.
Ruth broke her 10,000 meter school record with a time of 32 minutes, 50.17 seconds at the East First Round of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium on May 29. She placed sixth of 48 runners in the race to advance to the NCAA Championships on June 12.
In lap 10, Ruth ran the fastest 400m split of any runner (1:18.47) to surge to the lead. She followed that with a split of 1:18.10 to stay ahead of the pack. She remained with the lead pack of runners as she ran her fastest mile split of 5:06.72 in the fourth mile of the 25-lap race. Ruth ran her three fastest lap splits – 1:15.79, 1:16.43 and 1:16.89 – in that fourth mile.
Ruth followed that with her second fastest mile split of 5:13.17 in mile 5. She finished the race with a 400m split of 1:17.19 in the final lap to break the 10,000m school record and punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Liam placed 26th in the men's hammer at the NCAA East First Round at Hodges Stadium on May 28; it marked the highest finish of the three Wildcats who competed at the meet. Liam recorded his top mark of 61.97m (203 feet-3 inches) on his second attempt after recording a throw of 61.48m (201-8) in Round 1. Liam committed a foul on his third and final attempt.
Liam had successfully defended his America East hammer title with a personal-best mark of 64.91m (212-11) and then also won the New England crown on May 10 before competing at the NCAA East First Round meet.
